Kila Kila Kila, finds OOIOO retreating somewhat from the elaborate psychedelia of Green and Gold, opting instead for a sparser, but just as hypnotic, sound as exemplified by the lovely, lighter-than-air "Ene Soda" and "Northern Lights." The album's lengthiest tracks, such as "Sizuku Ring Neng" and "Aster," showcase this direction. The latter song begins its 15-minute excursion with typically eclectic instrumentation -- including cello and contrabass -- and masses of P-We's vocals, then shifts to prickly guitars and a rolling bassline. The song then shifts to a darker, more angular feel before segueing into a percussion-led passage, and then ends with a more serene version of its opening motif. "Sizuku Ring Neng" is a shorter but just as ambitious song: it begins as a nearly tribal call-and-response backed by strangely sparkling percussion before a joyfully elephantine bass, keyboards, and OOIOO's trademark high-pitched, repetitive guitars kick in and give the track a simultaneously old and futuristic feel. Kila Kila Kila also explores the band's jazz leanings, particularly on the loping rhythms that Yuka Yoshimura sets down under "Anuenue Au"'s undulating keyboards; "On Mani" takes a heavier approach, pitting strings against horns and rapid-fire guitars. While this album may not be quite as mind-blowing as Green and Gold, Kila Kila Kila shows that even in their most restrained moments, OOIOO are never less than a beautifully, playfully challenging group. ~ Heather Phares

Uncut (4/04, p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 - "In the continued absence of a new album from her other band, the incomparable Boredoms, this'll do just fine." Magnet (2/04, p.104) - "KILA KILA KILA contains plenty of smart rhythmic trickery, mid-song hijackings and amorphous instrumental shifts..." | | Animal Collective Sung Tongs CD (2004)
Kila Kila Kila CD music
$13.85 From the goofy, fluttering phrasing of "Who Could Win a Rabbit" to the lilting harmonies in "College" (which could easily be an outtake from the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), Animal Collective oozes with a starry-eyed, back-to-childhood sensibility. But like anyone's youth, SUNG TONGS is full of monsters and things ...

| | Boredoms Seadrum/House Of Sun CD (2005)
Kila Kila Kila songs
$15.25 "Seadrum" rises up from a combination of Meredith Monk-style vocalizations, Krautrock space jams, African drumming, and Sun Ra-inspired free jazz--a rhythmic pulse that increases in intensity over the song's 23-plus minutes. "House of Sun," alternately, is a hazy, psychedelic swarm with explicit Indian overtones in its motifs and instrumentation (which includes tanpura and sitars), and sounds like Ravi Shankar waking up inside a hive of bees. These descriptions may not initially sound appealing, but the Boredoms' usual flair for the unexpected has been integrated into ...

| | Jesus & Mary Chain Stoned & Dethroned CD (1994) (Import)
Kila Kila Kila album
$13.15 Since 1985, Glasgow brothers William and Jim Reid (aka The Jesus & Mary Chain) have immersed themselves in a wash of pop references as akin to Lou Reed's TRANSFORMER as to the Beach Boys' earliest singles. While more subdued, and painted in acoustic strokes, Jesus & Mary Chain's newest effort STONED & DETHRONED continues the band's mutation of pop's melodic sense.
STONED & DETHRONED is a step in a new direction for the Reids. Much of their early material seemed like a mixture of conflicting eras, bubblegum harmonies layered on top of impossible distorted guitar. Now with STONED & DETHRONED, The Jesus & Mary Chain have honed their erratic opposing sides into a cleaner, more focused sound.
Relying more on acoustics and softer production, the album sounds aimed at the MTV "Unplugged" audience, but proves the Jesus & Mary Chain adept in the power of quiet as well as the joy of distortion.
Having made a name for itself through its career for punishing noise combined with candy-coated hooks, the Jesus and Mary Chain took a sideways step on Stoned & Dethroned that actually worked rather handsomely. The Reids turned the emphasis toward much calmer, acoustic folk/country-tinged songs and, for the first time since Psychocandy, recorded with an actual full band, with Monti from Curve once again doing the drum honors and touring bassist Ben Lurie handling the same duties in studio. The appearance of Hope Sandoval on lead single "Sometimes Always" makes perfect sense, as Mazzy Star's electric/acoustic psych flow is, if not the inspiration for Stoned & Dethroned, a close enough cousin. "Sometimes Always" does indeed make for a lovely little duet, not quite a Lee & Nancy combination for a new generation, but a fine romp anyway, while on the other guest number Shane Macgowan from the Pogues takes a nicely mournful lead turn on "God Help Me." As for the album in general, the songs are much more than simply a toned-down Mary Chain -- it's almost as if the group were making its bid to finally demonstrate that it really was comprised of actual musicians, honest to goodness. What feedback there is appears as smoky atmosphere rather than skull-crushing scream, and oddly enough the end results almost suggest early-'70s Rolling Stones more than anything else, tinged as always with pure pop hooks and melodies. William's singing actually comes more to the fore than before, his warmer, less sneering vocals suiting the burned-out feeling of the album very nicely. ...
