Noise For Pretend/Blanket Musi Decemberists/Bobby Birdman
Read: is a combined label sampler/tribute album from the Portland-based imprint Hush. These interpretations are tasteful, almost reverent -- even when the arrangements are modified, there's consideration for that particular "Björkness," that sly detachment her work is usually steeped in. So Kaitlyn Ni Donovan hesitates over each line in "Hunter" like she's creeping up on her prey. Ben Gibbard's "Joga" is more conventionally indie, his whisper resting lightly on the plucked acoustic strings. The Decemberists get all indie with "Human Behavior," too, but there's a sardonic quality in the vocal that ably matches the rhythm track's spot-on slink. Hush's quirky Noise for Pretend is probably one of the only groups that can handle "It's Oh So Quiet" without getting all excited and hyper and blowing the whole thing. Noise proves this with a version that wraps understated instrumentation around Esperanza Spalding's vocal for a truly luminous reinterpretation. Other Read: highlights include Corrina Repp's stark "You've Been Flirting Again" and a shuffling turntablist take on "Possibly Maybe" from Roots of Orchis. ~ Johnny Loftus

$12.29 The Starlight Mints continue with their sweet indie pop for Built on Squares and carefully dodge those constant comparisons to the Flaming Lips for a funky second album. Read: Interpreting Bjork CD music
$11.39 Erase Errata's second album, At Crystal Palace, continues the band's ongoing flirtations with order and chaos, ping-ponging between the two with such ease that it's clear that even their most disjointed moments are under their control. Songs such as "Driving Test" and "Go to Sleep" are as angular and tense as ever -- the way Jenny Hoyston snarls "Go to sleep!" on the latter ensures a string of nights spent with eyes wide open -- but every now and then the band lets down its avant-garde and allows some melodic, and even poppy, moments to exist within its formidably sharp music. "Ca. Viewing" is one of Erase Errata's most accessible songs, at once prickly and playful. Meanwhile, "Let's Be Active c/o Club Hott" and "Surprize It's Easter" are both slightly more melodic than their earlier work; Hoyston's vocals come closer to honest-to-goodness ...
