The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.

This collection of songs stems from the partisans (defiant freedom fighters) around the Vilna ghetto and woodlands in eastern Poland during World War II (though performed more recently for this album). The songs deal with the sorrows of occupation, of the then-contemporary murders, of life in a ghetto. They deal with everyday issues in a sense of escapism from what was not the everyday. They deal with the armed resistance movement fighting the Nazis sporadically in the forests, often alongside Russians working toward similar ends. Despite its lumbering length and some slick, late-'90s R&B formalities, Kenny Lattimore's second album is a real treat. Combining smooth grooves with an even silkier voice, Lattimore shifts from bedroom operator to new jack king with an ease that seems neither forced nor affected on From the Soul of Man. The R&B stew is made even heartier by a couple of inspired covers, even if they're not totally successful in their execution (who knew that "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" could be so sexy?). When the album tosses in basic contemporary soul ingredients -- songs that are more finely chiseled than actually tuneful, occasional robotic singing, glossy production that's hiding something -- it flows into mind-numbing conventionality. But when Lattimore gently soaks in the material (nearly all of it penned by him), From the Soul of Man is truly a spirited affair. ~ Michael Gallucci
