| | Fall Live At The Witch Trials CD Fall Discography of CDs
The long, strange saga of the Fall, arguably the UK's first post-punk band, begins with LIVE AT THE WITCH TRIALS. The group's 1979 debut album was recorded in-studio (despite its title) during a single day, fully capturing the urgency of both the times and the music. Punk poet Mark E. Smith and his ragtag crew had actually been playing in one form or another since '77, so their sound here is surprisingly mature.
Nevertheless, there are some obvious differences between WITCH TRIALS and the style the Fall would develop over the next few years. While the jagged, angular guitars, herky-jerky rhythms, and apocalypse-now lyrics are all in place, there's more of a link to the past; a number of the songs are built around what could almost be conventional blues-rock riffs, and the Ginsberg-goes-to-Manchester frenzy of Smith's best-known material hasn't quite been reached here. Still, this is bold, striking stuff, new territory being gamely charted out by the band, who could never have guessed how seminal WITCH TRIALS would become. This expanded, two-disc edition also features no less than 38 (!) bonus tracks, including singles, compilation cuts, and concert and radio recordings preceding the album session. These generous additions make this a Fall collector's paradise.

$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, ...

$13.35 PETER FOLDY was born in Hungary and raised in Sydney, Australia where he was influenced toward a career in music after forging a friendship with three brothers who would later find international success as the BEE GEES. After a family move to Toronto, Foldy enrolled in film school but supported himself by playing in rock bands. When a young music executive heard some of his demos, Foldy was quickly signed to a small, indie label, Kanata Records. His first recording, “BONDI JUNCTION” quickly reached number one on RPM's Adult Contemporary Chart, received two Juno Award nominations and was a legitimate pop hit across Canada. An album entitled “Peter Foldy” soon followed. Before long Foldy was lured to Capitol/EMI Canada, and the records, “ROXANNE” and “JULIE-ANN” also climbed to Top 10 status on charts across Canada and the US.When his Capitol deal ended three years later, Foldy moved to Los Angeles where a chance meeting with Tina Turner’s manger, led to a deal on RCA's brand new Free Flight label. Foldy continued his musical momentum with “LOVE CITY”, and ...
