Among its energetic bursts of poppy, punkish energy, Diffuser's 2001 effort, Injury Loves Melody, still clung to vestiges of the band's noisier indie rock past. It made for a more ambitious record, but one also fraught with continuity errors -- Diffuser couldn't decide whether they wanted to go all-out with the pop screech. If that was the case, then frontman Tomas Costanza has finally made the decision and taken the pop plunge. He's the sole songwriter for Making the Grade, and has turned in a completely unthreatening, tinfoil-and-plastic batch of songs about girls and sarcasm, all amped to 11 and akin to the outsized modern rock of types like Lit and Goldfinger. Actually, with perfect pop-punk anthems like "Here's to You" and "New High" rushing past in a blur of pep, catch phrases, and giddy power chords, it's tempting to compare Diffuser to the ready-made mall punk of youngsters like Simple Plan. But Costanza's a little older than those guys, even if he doesn't want to admit it, and that age buffer means his band's decidedly young-skewed music is trashy and immediate, but not simply opportunistic. It's blatantly a product of the now, but Diffuser seems committed to the material, and that's important. The highlight is the unstoppable "Get It On"; it's another entry in the party train of pop songs dedicated to naughty crushes, a locomotive most recently restarted by Fountains of Wayne. Producer/mixer Mark Trombino also deserves mention here, as he's filled in Costanza's songwriting gaps with enormous guitar tones, slick harmonies, and the occasional string section. There's a slim chance Making the Grade will make much of an impact beyond its initial shelf life. But while it's switched on, feel free to bang on the steering wheel. ~ Johnny LoftusCMJ (07/14/03, p.7) - "...Fun, unpretentious stadium rock..."

On The Wires Of Our Nerves
Add N To X On The Wires Of Our Nerves CD  (1998)

Making The Grade
CD $10.95  3 stars Audio Samples
Unknown Contributor Roles: Steve Claydon; Ann Shenton; Rob Allum; Barry Smith.
On the Wires of Our Nerves follows an intriguing tangent of electronica, adding underground noise rock to the mix to achieve a sound dubbed "avant hard"; drawing on influences ranging from Kraftwerk to Throbbing Gristle, Add N to X filters their electronica through a wall of distortion, yielding such innovative sounds as the superb single "King Wasp." ~ Jason Ankeny
At this point in the trio's career, Add N to (X) isn't all that. They're good, but great? On the Wires answers that question with a convincing "maybe", raising another one along the way: what happens when a certain style of futurism finally becomes a retro style that can be slotted alongside everything from rockabilly to medieval folk chanting? Arguably Kraftwerk - one of Add N to (X)'s obvious mentors -- were just as retro in their day, evoking in a quietly emotional way, an outdated 1920s/1930s vision of the future while also forecasting where forthcoming music would end up. To Add N to (X)'s further credit, they're not a one-note tribute band like Komputer or Kraftwelt, bringing in some of Krautrock's rougher, electronic side as well as early avant noisesters like Cabaret Voltaire. Add to that a great visual sense -- the grotesque album cover is a wonderful blend of the sterile and visceral, its own sick joke -- and there should be much more on this album than there is. But for all the hollow drum machine sounds (and real drumming, which underlays the best songs here), analog synth loops and tweaks, and odd Vocoder interjections that should make Add N to (X) a welcome alternative to Yet Another Rock Band, it feels like the trio recorded some jam sessions, thought them sufficient, and then left the studio. Praise doesn't belong to a band just for being there and using certain instruments -- thankfully, though, the trio found a better way in its immediate future than what's on display in On the Wires. ~ Ned Raggett
