Recording information: Godcity Studios. With Drive Like Jehu's Yank Crime as their clearest reference point, Sex Positions proves that hardcore music can continue to transcend the confines of scenes and be -- gulp -- relevant. Like the Blood Brothers, Sex Positions stretches the limitations of the genre by constantly experimenting and redefining what it means to be hardcore. Touches like the harmonica on "Interlude" set this album apart and make it far more dynamic then the standard scream-along fare. Of course, these guys can tear it up. "Commit It" is one of the most aggressive, yet contagious, songs of the year and "You Better Start Running" has the loose and punchy dementia of the Stooges. But as they thrash through unremitting pieces like "Dead Lay Very Still," the band's new wave influence subtly sneaks to the surface. Keyboards wouldn't be a surprise on future albums, because the one thing that is certain about Sex Positions is that they are always changing. ~ Charles Spano Sex Positions Music | List Price | $12.97 (You save $2.52) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs | | Label | Deathwish | | Orig Year | 2004 | | All Time Sales Rank | 228229 | | CD Universe Part number | 6661267 | | Catalog number | 37 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Mar 30, 2004 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Kurt Ballou | | Engineer | Kurt Ballou |

Sex Positions
$14.49 Photographer: Ben Watts. Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over ...

This is the CD companion to the PBS documentary GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT: THE LEGACY OF SUN RECORDS. If you know anything about rock & roll, you know that Sun Records looms large over the history and mythos of the music -- enough so that it does deserve its own full-fledged tribute (what else could suit the home of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, and the Killer, as well as cult icons like Warren Smith, Sonny Burgess, Billy Lee Riley, and the Collins Kids). Still, given the history of tribute records, it's easy to be suspicious about the star-studded 2001 affair Good Rockin' Tonight: The Legacy of Sun Records, since this equation often equals less than the sum of the parts. However, there is a crucial difference with Sun Records -- if you're truly in love with the label, it's hard not to try to explain your love, which is a decidedly different thing than paying respect. After all, respect implies a certain sense of reserve, and while that's true with some of the cuts here (Chris Isaak's "It Wouldn't Be the Same Without You," for instance), most of this record is joyous, loose, and fun. It is possible to tell the difference between artists who were kids when they fell in love with Sun, since they're looser with the material, capturing the very feel of the records, where the newer artists -- the Howlin' Diablos and Kid Rock's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" should by all rights should have been a barnstormer, but the hip-hop affectations lead to a slower tempo and lazy production compared to any of Jerry Lee's breakneck, relentless versions -- seem obsessed with making these songs fit their sound. With the veterans, there is a bit of a ...
