| | Matthew Sweet Platinum & Gold Collection CD - Import Matthew Sweet Discography of CDs
Recorded between 1991 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Jared Patterson.
Matthew Sweet contributed one of the finest records of the '90s, 1991's Girlfriend, and while his work has rarely visited the lofty heights achieved by that album, he has crafted several solid and sometimes wonderful albums since then. BMG's Platinum & Gold Collection gathers up 12 of Sweet's tunes and lays them down in chronological order, taking three tracks from Girlfriend, two from the follow-up, Altered Beast, three from his most commercially successful album, 100% Fun, two from Blue Sky on Mars, and one from In Reverse. Sweet's best (and best-known) songs are here ("Girlfriend," "I've Been Waiting," "The Ugly Truth," and "Sick of Myself") as well as some less likely tracks that weren't found on 2000's Time Capsule: The Best of Matthew Sweet. "Falling" is one of those songs, and it is one of the many hidden gems lurking on each of Sweet's albums. A minor-chord, Neil Young-inspired ballad, it features a spiraling, often breathtaking guitar solo running throughout and one of Sweet's most heartfelt vocals. Platinum & Gold also picks up the track "Superdeformed" from 1993's No Alternative collection, and while it is nice to have a semi-rarity present it is not one of Sweet's best songs, coming off a little too grunge-influenced and melodically weak. Perhaps it would have been better to add another track from the underrated In Reverse album, one of the shorter songs to complement the very epic "Thunderstorm," which is included. One could argue song selection or worry about omissions, but in the end this is a fairly representative collection that does a good job summing up Sweet's career so far -- not as good a job as Time Capsule, but it sells for less. If you are undecided about which to get, perhaps the cover photo will sway you. Time Capsule has an amazing shot of Girlfriend cover girl Tuesday Weld, while Platinum & Gold has a nondescript close-up of Sweet in sunglasses. ~ Tim Sendra

Platinum & Gold Collection music CDs
$18.99 Greene's album is a far more respectable effort than that of most actors and actresses crossing over into the record world for the first time. Certainly it has far more integrity than most such ventures as well; it's doubtful that many Americans trying to do a cash-in album on the back of their acting success would record a CD in which the majority of lyrics are in Spanish. While it's fair to say she'll remain more known for her acting, Ojo de Tiburon is a pleasant and accomplished effort. Greene has a nice, just slightly tremulous voice, and her songs are slightly sorrowful, subdued works at a midpoint between Latin folk and genteel American singer/songwriting. Ciro Hurtado's production is tastefully spacious and understated, emphasizing acoustic guitar and sparse cello, percussion, and violin. As the lyrics are more often in Spanish than English, its crossover appeal may be limited, though bilingual lyrics are provided in the sleeve. ~ Richie Unterberger
Now more than ever, people seem to be erecting borders - social borders, cultural borders, musical borders. Not so very long ago, dance music, hard rock and folk songs could be heard on the same commercial radio stations. Those days have passed. But every now and then, someone decides to defy preconceptions, refuses to be pigeonholed by marketing demographics, and creates music that challenges our expectations. Michele Greene, the Emmy-nominated actress best known for her role as Abby Perkins on the hit television legal drama, "L.A. Law," has opted out of the labeling game to create "Ojo de Tiburón" ("Eye of the Shark"), a CD that travels freely across styles, languages and cultures, not ...

Platinum & Gold Collection CD music
$12.65 Rock bands come and go. There are hopes and dreams, blood and sweat, triumphs and failures. The microcosm of the van, the practice space, and the dingy stage enlarges the tiny everyday dramas of the struggling musician into something profound and epic. As with our own lives, the brief incarnation of a band seems so crucial during its existence, but its death reveals the sad reality that all things are temporary and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But before sliding into the depths of despair and cynicism, one must remember that all things leave a trace, and from ashes and dust grows new life. Destruction Island may never have existed if not for the life cycle of bands that preceded them. The quartet paid their dues and learned their lessons in a variety of underground acts. Having ...
