From a mishmash of British, American, and Israeli musicians comes Shir, a group of relatively young musicians playing Israeli songs. The tone remains somewhat light throughout the proceedings, thanks in large part to Piotr Jordan's violin work and the light vocals from Maurice Chernick and Ivor Goldberg. The songs chosen for the album are primarily from the current nation of Israel, that is to say post-WWII. The songs are largely on the joyous end, or at least optimistic, and the music carries the mood quite well. The few that don't stem from the modern Israeli state include the classic "Hava Nagila" and "Bashana Haba'ah." Overall, the album is mildly standard in sound, but there is something to be said for the focus on more modern works, where most Jewish albums tend to aim for the more ancient end of the spectrum. Thoroughly enjoyable. ~ Adam Greenberg
Shir: Ivor Goldberg (vocals, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, classical guitar); Maurice Chernick (vocals, clarinet); Piotr Jordan (violin); Steve Rose (melodica, acoustic bass, percussion).

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Israeli Songs CD music
$11.65 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
Although it took more than a year of concerts and promotional appearances, Michael Bublé's 2003 debut disc of swinging pop standards finally ascended the Billboard album chart and landed at number 47. That peak may not seem impressive at first, but in a musical world dominated by rap or the latest flavor of alternative rock, Bublé's upper chart appearance was a real accomplishment and it sparked a renewed interest in music associated with great vocalists like Frank Sinatra. | | Best Of The Irish Rovers. CD (1999)
Israeli Songs CD music
$7.49 Recorded between 1966 and 1971. Originally released on Decca. Includes liner notes and interviews with band members by Todd Everett.
Somewhere between Bing Crosby's vocal novelties back in the '40s and the current popularity of dance troupes like Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, the flag of Irish music was held aloft in North America during the '60s by the success of the Irish Rovers. Patterning themselves after the Clancy Brothers (another popular group during the folk boom of the late '50s and early '60s), the group scored their 15 minutes of fame with the children's novelty, "The Unicorn," included here on Best of Irish Rovers. But the group was no children's novelty act, as witnessed by the preponderance of straight-ahead Irish drinking songs that spice up this 16-track collection. ...
| | Tamia Nu Day CD (2000)
Israeli Songs music CDs
$9.29 Whether she's edifying the R&B audience with her take on the '80s Hall & Oates tune "Can't Go for That," showing off her torch-singer side on the piano-based ballad "Love Me in a Special Way," or presenting herself as a thoroughly contemporary hip-hop informed artist on "Long Distance Love," it's clear that Tamia has a lot to offer. The singer's self-titled debut featured production work from pop maestro Quincy Jones, but this time around, production chores are taken up by Missy Elliott, among others, and rap icons Snoop Dogg and Warren G put in guest appearances. Despite the increased fraternization with hip-hop personalities, melodic ballads abound, and A NU DAY rests on a solid R&B/pop foundation. Holding it all together is Tamia's voice, which is an impressive instrument that admirably avoids many of the cliches and pratfalls of the genre.
Canadian-born chanteuse Tamia's second album, A Nu Day, is a nice pop-R&B record that doesn't set off to break much new ground. She has a traditional singer's voice a la Vanessa Williams. Elektra. 2000.
Recorded at The Record Plant, Paramount, Hollywood, California; Quad, New York, New York; DARP Studios, Atlanta, Georgia.
Engineers: Anne Catalino, Davis Lopez, Carlton Lynn.
Personnel: Tamia (vocals, background vocals); Professa (guitar, electric guitar); Jay Williams (guitar); Fernando Pullum (horns); Rhemario ...
