Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical ...

Rockin' At The Drive-In CD music

Although King was one of the most important independent record labels of the 1940s-1960s, they were far more adept at R&B, blues, soul, and (prior to rock 'n' roll) country, than they were at straightforward rock 'n' roll. Like so many indies steeped in the roots of R&B and hillbilly, though, they tried their hand at rockabilly and all-out rock 'n' roll, at times connecting with the early or fading careers of big names. This compilation has a couple dozen sides from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s (though most are the mid-'50s to the early '60s), none of them are particularly exceptional, though most of the performers are trying pretty hard. The main shortfall lies in the generic nature of much of the material; some of these sound like over-the-hill country swing vets doing rockabilly, or quasi-rockabilly, under duress, and some of the others are so ...

Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig ...

This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble ...

Allen Toussaint From A Whisper To A Scream CD  (1970) (Import) United Kingdom

Rockin' At The Drive-In music CDs
CD $14.95  Definitive Album
Kent Soul has done an exceptional job in remastering and reissuing Allen Toussaint's classic sophomore long-player -- which was known simply as Allen Toussaint -- and the "bonus" selection, a vocal-less blues-meets-funk titled "Number Nine." When these songs first surfaced circa 1970, Toussaint (piano/vocals) had become a decade-long veteran of the New Orleans' Crescent City soul movement. Under his own name as well as the pseudonym of Naomi Neville, he was a composer, producer, and even a recording session musician. He left a trail of influential R&B titles that would resound back across the pond in the form of cover versions by the likes of the Rolling Stones ("Pain in My Heart"), ...
