Symphonic Soul album
$4.55 The Four Tops were having a career resurgence when this excellent live album was recorded in 1974, which may explain the group's overall ebullience throughout. In any case, the repertoire is nicely split between their Motown '60s classics and their '70s hits, and the recorded sound is great; despite the presence ...
| | Johnny Mathis That's What Friends Are For CD (1978)
Symphonic Soul CD music
$5.19 Also available in 3-pack with YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE and BETTER TOGETHER: THE DUET ALBUM.
Recorded in 1978. Originally released on Columbia (35435). Includes liner notes by Ellis Widner.
Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams made a fine team on this collection of sentimental love songs and light pop ballads. They had had previous success on the title track, which had been included on her first release, so they opted for a full session. They had a moderate hit with a cover of "You're All I Need To Get By," and they also reworked Stevie Wonder's "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Going To Do)." It peaked at Number 19 on the pop chart, and actually proved Williams' most consistent album from a sales standpoint. ~ Ron Wynn
The 1978 duet album That's What Friends Are For was far more of a highlight in Deniece Williams' career than it was in Johnny Mathis'. Nonetheless, it's well-done, lightly likable late-1970s adult contemporary R&B music, the two sparring sweetly and respectfully on upbeat, radio-friendly, easy listening soul tunes and romantic ballads. Gene Page's arrangements are pretty (and effectively) understated for the genre, and though the record doesn't boast any heavyweight classics, it did land a small hit with their cover of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "You're All I Need to Get By." The 2003 CD reissue adds four bonus tracks, including their 1978 Number One hit "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late"; its B-side, a cover of Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb's "Emotion"; "Love Won't Let Me Wait," a Mathis-Williams duet from Mathis' 1984 album A Special Part ...

$12.39 Nicolette Larson first came to public attention when she backed up Neil Young on his American Stars 'n Bars disc. She went on to duet with him on his much anticipated Comes a Time album, which was the genesis for Nicolette. Using an even wider-ranging style than friends Linda Ronstadt or Emmylou Harris, Larson hit it big right out of the starting gate with Young's "Lotta Love," a super Top Ten smash. From there, she broadens her approach to include a soulful "You Send Me," the Louvin Bros' "Angels Rejoiced," Motown's "Baby, ...

Symphonic Soul music CDs
$14.79 Born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents, Mazin moved to Syria at age two and lived most of his life in the village of Alkafer. He received inspiration from the people of the village and this fed his musical soul. He was inspired by the sound of the instruments and wanted to learn to compose. With family's support, he started to play Accordion at age five, with no instruction and found no difficulty to sing and transfer the melody to his fingers. The first song he played was 'London Bridge Is Falling Down' as his father always sang it to him. At age nine, Mazin composed his first song for his school's theatre. He won the national competition in Syria for composing and playing Accordion twice, in 1985 and 1986. Starting to learn more instruments by himself, he began playing the Oud (Mid Eastern Guitar or Lute) at thirteen, then Nay {Arabic flute or bamboo) at sixteen then Piano and keyboards, plus Arabic percussion (Tabla, Reqe, Katem) by listening to the extensive library of Arabic music and learning a lot of songs. Mazin's first project was with English singer Terry Hall for the album called The Hour of Two Lights. He played Accordion, Oud and contributed arranging for the eastern musical section. It was played on BBC Radio and 3MTV. He joined the multi-cultural band NARA, with musicians from the UK, Ireland, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, introducing Eastern music to the West. He performed at World Music Festivals and venues in the UK, Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Greece, Ireland, Croatia and Czech Republic. Mazin produced a CD by re-arranging traditional Egyptian songs that have been performed by famous Arab singers between 1960-1970. He also performed at Royal Albert Hall in 2005 as an intro band for the famous Arab singer Rageb Aalamaa ...
