Singer Cassandra Wilson was still searching for her own style during the time of this live concert. Accompanied by keyboardist James Weidman, electric bassist Kevin Bruce Harris and drummer Mark Johnson, Wilson performs four of her originals (none of which are too memorable), Steve Coleman's "Desperate Move" and a couple of standards ("'Round Midnight" and "Body and Soul"). This forgettable (and somewhat boring) set is strictly for Cassandra Wilson completists; more general listeners are advised to get her more interesting mid-'90s recordings instead. ~ Scott Yanow

Live album
$51.95 THE COMPLETE VERVE STUDIO MASTER TAKES makes a definitive and compelling case for Holiday's Verve tenure. Packaged in a deep-dish metallic box (which resembles the world's most beautiful lunch pail), THE COMPLETE comprises six CDs, a 60-page booklet filled with rare photographs and superb liner notes, and dazzlingly crisp sound via digital remastering. The musicians on these sessions were some of the finest of the era, and Holiday herself--even with a gift impaired by time and abuse--sings with impeccable artistry, and beautifully enough to break the heart. The set is essential for completists, and is also a great one-stop for those looking to acquaint themselves with Lady Day's later work.
Billie Holiday fans will argue eternally over the relative merits of the different phases of her career. In these arguments Lady Day's work for Verve, which roughly covered the last decade of her life, often gets short shrift. While it cannot be denied that Holiday had lost much of the elasticity and spring in her voice (due in large part to a rough ...

| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Live music CDs
$15.29 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, the LMO does exactly ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Live songs
$9.59 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never overwhelmed by pathos or grief. Instead, ...

| | Gene Ammons Big Sound CD (1958)
Live CD music
$8.49 Digitally remastered by Gary Hobish (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
THE BIG SOUND is a companion to GROOVE BLUES. Both albums were recorded on a single day in 1958 and feature an impressive array of players. Ammons' tenor saxophone is joined here by John Coltrane's alto, Paul Quinichette's tenor, Pepper Adams' alto, and Jerome Richardson's flute. The rhythm section is anchored by the piano of Mal Waldron. The set opens with the slow blues "Blue Hymn," an Ammons original. Waldron's "The Real McCoy" then kicks things into higher gear with an excitingly propulsive arrangement. The massed horns state the tune's main theme before breaking off into furious soloing. Likewise, Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" swings at a clip at once laid back and relentless. As with GROOVE BLUES, the album closes with a ballad, the song form forever ...
| | Charnett Moffett Still Life CD (1997)
Live music CDs
$13.89 In the 1980s and early 1990s, two groups tried to limit Charnett Moffett's creativity. On one hand, jazz purists wanted him to steer clear of fusion and confine himself to playing hard bop on the upright bass. On the other hand, there were marketing people and NAC radio programmers who urged Moffett to play unchallenging elevator Muzak. But thankfully, neither group got its way when Moffett was recording for Evidence in the 1990s. Moffett was far from the purist hardliner that former employer Wynton Marsalis is; nor did he aspire to become the Kenny G of the bass -- so on 1993-94's Planet Home and his next album, Still Life, he excelled by doing exactly what he felt like doing. "Full Circle," "Jungle Travel," and other gems on this fusion/post-bop ...
| | Essential Nina Simone CD (1993)
Live songs
$8.99 All tracks recorded between January 5th, 1967 and February 9th, 1972. Includes liner notes by Dawn Eden.
All tracks digitally remastered (July 1993, BMG Recording Studios).
"I Shall Be Released" appears here in its complete form for the first time.
This compilation brings together 12 tracks from Nina Simone's RCA period (1966-1974), where she put out nine albums after having recorded for the Bethlehem, Colpix, and Philips labels. The tracks collected here display the eclectic artistry of the mahogany-voiced Simone, and they're typical of her RCA ...
| | Battlefield Band Opening Moves CD (1993) (Import) United Kingdom
Live album
$14.55 OPENING MOVES is a fine sampler of the Battlefield Band's earliest material. The original albums from which these songs have been culled--THE BATTLEFIELD BAND (1977), AT THE FRONT (1978), and STAND EASY (1979)--were long available only on vinyl (STAND EASY has since been re-released on CD). While featuring variations in the group's personnel, the compilation retains the Band's top-notch musicianship and sense of musical tradition.
The contributions of Jamie McMenemy (cittern, mandolin, whistles, bouzouki and vocals), and Irish guitarist, vocalist, and bodhran player Pat Kilbride are especially notable on story-ballads such as "The Shipyard Apprentice" and "The Lady Leroy." Elsewhere, Scottish reels and Irish jigs are given sprightly, energetic treatments, as on "Silver Spear/Humours of Tulla," and the trio of dance themes that includes "My Wife's a Wanton Wee Thing." Also impressive here (in addition to the musicianship of founders Brian MacNeill and Alan Reid, whose work can be heard on later Battlefield efforts) are John Gahagan's tin whistle playing and Duncan MacGillvray's moving Highland pipes. Taken together, these 17 cuts provide an overview of the group's early oeuvre, showing why they became one of the mainstays of Scotland's progressive ...
| | Beatles Yellow Submarine CD (1969) (Import) Japan; Reissue; SDTK
Live CD music
$39.49 Starting out as a sing-a-long vehicle for Ringo Starr on REVOLVER, "Yellow Submarine" became the inspiration for the 1968 animated feature film of the same name. Most of the soundtrack was composed and orchestrated by George Martin, but the remaining six songs were far from being Beatle cast-offs. George Harrison's two contributions, "Only A Northern Song" and "It's All Too Much" mark the adventurously experimental phase the Beatles were in at that time and dabble in woozy psychedelic shadings laced with orchestrations that continued to influence cutting-edge pop artists for decades to come. Along with the aforementioned "Yellow Submarine," other Lennon/McCartney compositions include the good-time, skiffle-flavored "All Together Now," the Lennon-driven rocker "Hey Bulldog," and "All You Need Is Love"--the ...
