Trumpeter Greg Hopkins' second CD as leader for Summit is a meeting of five veterans, three of whom (guitarist Mick Goodrick, tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce, and bassist Jim Stinnett) are seasoned jazz educators; the final member of the group is drummer Gary Chaffee. Together they explore Hopkins' creative post-bop compositions. The opener, the title track, features a lively bossa nova rhythm that propels both Hopkins and Pierce through its tricky changes. The leader's warm-toned flügelhorn is showcased in his intricate ballad "Boon Moon" and lush "Waltz for Charlie." Pierce is the perfect foil for Hopkins and a brilliant soloist in his own right, especially in "Scooter," which seems to be inspired from a childlike chant that serves as the basis for the song. The one standard of the session is a straight-ahead arrangement of the swinging ballad "Here's to My Lady." Greg Hopkins is yet another example of the Summit label's desire to give greater exposure to deserving musicians, and this CD is well worth the investment. ~ Ken Dryden

There aren't that many guitarists who can claim to have played alongside both John Zorn and Norah Jones. But Adam Rogers, whose credits also include stints with Regina Carter, Elvis Costello, the Mingus Orchestra, and Simon Shaheen, and who was co-leader of the respected fusion band Lost Tribe, is nothing if not broad minded. The nice thing is that in his work as a leader he lets his wide range of experiences influence his playing without feeling the need to showcase all of them individually; instead, he plays in a generally quite straight-ahead style, with a unique combination of a warm, intimate tone and a sometimes aggressive attack. His compositions are highly sophisticated -- occasionally maybe just a bit too much so. On one or two numbers on Allegory it becomes a chore to try to follow the chord progressions, though Rogers' playing and that of saxophonist Chris Potter are incisive and interesting ...

This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. (Ervin had made two records for Pacific Jazz, which is now owned, like Blue Note, by EMI.) The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD.
