| | Groove Troopers Zoom Zoo CD - Import Groove Troopers Discography of CDs
Hailing from the Netherlands, Groove Troopers is a 14-piece jazz ensemble with a marked penchant for funk- and soul-inflected big band jazz and an already impressive repertoire of original tunes on its debut album. On Zoom Zoo, the band has only two real weaknesses: first, a tendency to get kind of longwinded on material that doesn't really deserve extended treatment -- like the otherwise enjoyable "Anitsja" (which would have made a fine four- or five-minute song, but really drags on at ten-and-a-half minutes) and "Absolution" (which starts out strong but wears out its welcome well before the end). The other is a production problem: it's too bad the horns weren't recorded more closely, because the part writing on tunes like "Nina's Dream" and "Bearing Bears and Boring Bores" is really impressive, and you shouldn't have to strain to hear the details. "Stampede" borrows a few tricks from Henry Mancini, and "Nuria" brings a firm but mellow tone to the proceedings. This is a promising debut, if not a perfect one. ~ Rick Anderson

Zoom Zoo album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental ...

| | Dave Brubeck Time Out CD (1959) Remastered
Zoom Zoo songs
$6.25 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex ...
| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Zoom Zoo album
$13.69 Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was as responsible as anyone else in rehabilitating Germany's post-war world image. The Taragon label is re-releasing all of Kaempfert's many albums in an ambitious reissue project. This excellent compilation is the one to have however.
As well as being a successful composer ("Strangers in the Night," "Spanish Eyes," "Danke Schon," "L.O.V.E" are all his compositions), Kaempfert was an even better producer, superior even ...

| | Marian McPartland Live At Yoshi's Nitespot CD (1995)
Zoom Zoo music CDs
$9.59 Recorded live at Yoshi's Nitespot, Oakland, California on November 11-12, 1995. Includes liner notes by John McDonough.
Marian McPartland has continued to grow as a musician over her long career, constantly exploring new songs and new styles while rekindling standards and jazz classics with her own distinctive touch at the keyboard. This pair of 1995 sessions at the Yoshi's Nitespot in Oakland, CA, feature her in a trio setting with bassist Bill Douglass and drummer Glenn Davis. She slowly percolates a driving bop arrangement of "Like Someone in Love," and her striking approach to "If I Should Lose You" conveys the emotion of the song even though the lyric isn't heard. She also ventures into modern Broadway with a mesmerizing waltz interpretation of the ballad "Pretty Women" (from Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd). Songs by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk are an expected part of any performance by the pianist, and she doesn't disappoint her audience with her lovely take of "Warm Valley" and a strident version of "Straight, No Chaser." She ...
| | Buyaka: The Ultimate Dancehall Collection CD (1994)
Zoom Zoo songs
$8.55 Calling this compilation the ULTIMATE DANCEHALL COLLECTION is misleading on a number of counts. Firstly, dancehall music has been popular in Jamaica since the early '80s, but only became known in the United States in the early '90s. The music popular in U.S. urban nightclubs that is called "dancehall" is not exactly ...
| | Captivating Johnny Crawford CD (1962)
Zoom Zoo album
$11.59 Teen idol actor-turned-singer Johnny Crawford had already established himself as a Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeer and primary cast member of The Rifleman prior to recording The Captivating Johnny Crawford (1962), his first of three long-players for Del-Fi in the 1960s. Boasting a decidedly rich tenor voice and dramatic delivery, Crawford quickly became a vocalist of considerable note. After his debut single, "Daydreams," reached a respectable number 70 and was a local "pick hit," Del-Fi founder Bob Keane set up a session featuring Crawford backed instrumentally by the Champs, a group that included, among others, Glen Campbell (guitar), Dash Crofts (drums), and Jerry Cole (guitar). The results were a mixture of ...
