The very best of the king of the electric slide guitar. From the immortal "Dust My Broom" to tracks from his final sessions including "Hand On Hand".
Personnel: Elmore James (vocals, guitar); Eddie Taylor (guitar); Johnny Big Moose Walker (piano); Willie Dixon (double bass); Homesick James Williamson (bass guitar). Elmore James has influenced every modern guitarist who has ever picked up a slide, and his hot-wired electric sound displayed an overdriven crunch long before it became the rock norm, making him the godfather of modern electric guitar. It is worth noting, as well, that his singing style, though seldom singled out as distinctive, was every bit as copied as his powerful guitar playing. Songs like "The Sky Is Crying," "It Hurts Me Too," "Rollin' and Tumblin'," and "Standing At the Crossroads" all show the kind of dynamics and phrasing, on both guitar and vocals, that would become standard by the mid- to late- '60s. This 20-song set from Snapper Records is a wonderfully varied and well-sequenced introduction to this marvelous musician. ~ Steve Leggett

$9.59 Audio Mixers: Ativin; Steve Albini. Recording information: Electrical Audio Recording; Chi (03/1998). Photographer: Matt Clark. Some eight years since Slint's Spiderland forever altered the indie-rock landscape, it's arguable that any valid derivations can still be fashioned from its blueprints. To be sure, Ativin's members never denied Slint's influence on their music. But over the course of an EP, a single and a full-length album, Ativin moved ...

Audio Mixer: John Porter. Recording information: Dockside Studios, Maurice, LA. Photographers: Michael Wilson ; Kevin Westenberg. Over the years, the music world has seen its share of over-70 singers who kept performing even though they didn't have much of a voice left: Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra are among the names that come to mind. But when B.B. King entered his 70s, the veteran blues singer/guitarist could still belt it out with confidence, and he does exactly that on Makin' Love Is Good for You, which was recorded when King was 74. Although this blues/soul ...
