| | Jimmy Reed Sun Is Shining CD Jimmy Reed Discography of CDs
The very best of the Big Boss Man, the master of down home blues. Original Vee Jay recordings including "Shame Shame Shame" and "Honest I Do".
Personnel: Jimmy Reed (guitar, harmonica); Jimmy Reed (vocals); Mary Reed (vocals); W.C. Dalton, John Brim, John Littlejohn (guitar); Henry Gray (piano); Willie Dixon (bass guitar); Albert King, Vernell Fournier (drums); Lefty Bates (guitar, bass guitar); Eddie Taylor, Remo Biondi (guitar); Earl Phillips (drums). Recording information: 06/06/1953-??/??/1963. With his mid-tempo three-chord blues shuffle rhythms, crude rack harmonica runs, and lazy, slurred vocals that barely navigated his limited four- or five-note melodies, Jimmy Reed seems to possess all the qualities of an amateur player destined to serve out his career in his own basement playing to no one in particular. That all of these musical limitations turned out ultimately to be assets is a lesson for all of us, because Reed's unerring simplicity produced blues and rock classics like "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," "Baby What You Want Me to Do," "Shame Shame Shame" and countless other songs, all built from the same crude template, and they've stood the test of time. This disc provides a generous portion of his hits for Vee-Jay Records, including the above songs and other genre standards like "I Ain't Got You," "Bright Lights Big City" and "Big Boss Man," making this a fine introduction to Reed. Longer compilations are available, but since his sound never really varies, this 20-song set is just about right. ~ Steve Leggett

Liner Note Author: Tony Rounce. Recording information: 1970-2005. Irma Thomas had already established herself as one of R&B's finest vocalists in the 1960s, a decade that saw the artist's most artistically (if not commercially) successful efforts. Although Thomas's '70s work was sporadic and less consistent, it was still of a high caliber. A WOMAN'S VIEWPOINT--THE ESSENTIAL 1970s RECORDINGS collects the best of Thomas's output from the decade, including rarities, singles, and selections from her album IN BETWEEN TEARS. Since many of these tracks are difficult to find, A WOMAN'S VIEWPOINT provides a valuable service, and is a great way for Thomas fans to catch up on some of the New Orleans queen's lesser-known material. The 1970s were lost years for Irma Thomas in some respects. She was wholly out of the commercial mainstream and, sometimes, without a recording contract. Nor had she yet carved out her well-deserved niche as a torchbearer of the New Orleans vocal soul tradition. Instead, she was only able to grab some recording time and record releases here and there, usually on small labels. While this 19-song CD, A Woman's Viewpoint: The Essential 1970s Recordings, is probably about as good a compilation as can be assembled from this period, there's no getting around the realization that this is far from ...
