| | Skip James Cypress Grove Blues CD Skip James Discography of CDs
This collection contains all the Skip James tracks released by Paramount records in 1931 in chronological order.
THE COMPLETE EARLY RECORDINGS by Skip James is one of the most essential blues albums in existence. With a voice that sounds like wind carving away rock (he sings in a high, quavering falsetto ringed with knowledge and pain), James laid down some of the most chilling acoustic blues ever set to wax.
"Devil Got My Woman," which opens this collection, is a case in point: a snaking siren song that leads down to the root of loss and mortal dread (if that description sounds like an exaggeration, listen to the track). James's deft, fingerpicking is everywhere in evidence, especially on the uncharacteristically ebullient "I'm So Glad." The surface noise of these old 78s is a distraction, but even that can't dilute the unbelievable power of these performances.
18 originals from the legendary 1931 sessions, including "Devil Got My Woman" and "20-22 Blues" by the Delta blues giant celebrated in the film "The Soul Of A Man".
Includes liner notes by Steve Calt.
Personnel includes: Skip James (vocals, guitar, piano).

Liner Note Author: Russell Beecher.Down Beat (8/95, p.55) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...this haunting collection...has the power to catch you by the throat. Using his high, keening voice and refined modal guitar picking, James infuses `rags' and blues with an inner-directed melancholy that perfectly fits his lyrics on death, desolation, devilry and the Depression..." Mojo (Publisher) (4/01, p.44) - "...Enigmatic and fascinating..." | | David "Honeyboy" Edwards Delta Bluesman CD (1992)
Cypress Grove Blues
$12.25 David "Honey Boy" Edwards was a contemporary of Robert Johnson.
One of the underrated greats of country blues, Honeyboy Edwards is heard on this superior release at the beginning and in the later part of his long career. A very authentic blues singer and guitarist who occasionally played harmonica, Edwards grew up in Mississippi and was captured by Alan Lomax in Clarksdale in 1942 for the first 14 selections on this CD. Already distinctive at the age of 27, Edwards was in Chicago during the 1950s but, despite being quite active, he hardly recorded at all until the late '70s. The final 13 selections on this CD are mostly from 1991 and they find Edwards being featured both solo and with Sunnyland Slim and Carey Bell in an excellent quintet, still singing and playing guitar with power. He also tells a few stories about the distant past. As of this writing in 2006, the 91-year-old Honeyboy Edwards, nearly the last link to Robert Johnson and Charley Patton in the 1930s, is still performing at blues festivals. Delta Bluesman remains his definitive release. ~ Scott Yanow
David âHoneyboyâ Edwards is one of the last of the original Delta Bluesmen, who traveled the South as hobos in the 1930s and who shaped early folk music into what later generations turned into rock ânâ roll. Still actively touring worldwide, he is in demand today both for his sharp memory as a purveyor of the oral history of the blues and for his music, performing at festivals, colleges, blues clubs and special events. Also, he is the only artist included in âA Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordingsâ who is still performing. Honeyboy Edwards was born in the Mississippi Delta in 1915. The son of a sharecropper, Edwards quickly learned that the sharecropping life was not for him. After meeting delta bluesman Big Joe Williams, he left home in Shaw, Mississippi when he was a teenager, and traveled the south by hopping the freight trains of blues lore â the Pea Vine, the Southern, the Yellow Dog. He worked with Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Tommy McClennan, Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), Howlinâ Wolf, and countless others while honing his musical skills on the dusty street corners of small towns and in the good-timing houses and juke joints of bigger towns like New Orleans. Not long after recording with Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1942, Honeyboy connected with teenage blues harmonica player Little Walter Jacobs, and headed up to Chicago, where he frequented the cityâs famous Maxwell Street Market. ...

$12.79 Although the subtitle of Broken Wheel is "Blues Violin Music," one shouldn't expect the album to be the second coming of Don "Sugarcane" Harris. More so than on the rest of Chris Murphy's thematically connected series of albums, there's only a tenuous connection ...
