20 historic cuts recorded for Sun Records, by the most powerful vocalist in this history of Chicago blues including "Baby Ride With Me" and "California Blues".
This is the latest in a series of increasingly ubiquitous reissues of Howlin' Wolf's early-'50s Memphis-era recordings for Sam Phillips. The sound is clean, and good and loud, and the selection -- short of matching Bear Family Records' complete Memphis sides by Wolf (spread over two CDs, which are in a class by themselves) -- is very good, representing the various aspects of Wolf's music from this period, including the delightful "California Boogie" and "Look A Here Baby," with their very '40s-ish, almost pop-sounding accompaniment, complete with sax, shimmering guitar, and some very melodic piano, surrounded by Wolf's usual harder blues sound. The external packaging is a little misleading, as it emphasizes Wolf's association with Chicago blues, which came long after most of these sides were cut (not that his music ever changed too much). The annotation is nicely written, though the Bear Family CDs still offer better information and are a good match for sound quality. ~ Bruce Eder

The title and concept of this funk compilation is contrived, as it's ostensibly meant to serve as a soundtrack for a Friday night when you're ready to launch a weekend of blowing off steam. Whether it's Friday night or not, though, it's a decent enough compilation of secondary funk. It spans the late-'60s soul-shaded variety to the disco-fied version from a decade or so later, though the absence of dates for most of the tracks in the liner notes sure does make it difficult to place it in total context. Some of these artists were big names (Mavis Staples, Curtis Mayfield, Joe Tex, Ike Turner, Lloyd Price, Bobby Womack, Lee Dorsey), and one or two of the actual tracks are fairly familiar to soul fans (the Meters' "Look-Ka-Py-Py," Funkadelic's "Electric Spanking of War Babies"). These 18 tracks are all that survive of 26 recorded for H.C. Speir of Paramount Records in Feb 1931. When, later in the year, Speir asked for more, Skip refused; he had found Jesus and gone to join his reformed father, who was now a Baptist minister, in Texas. And so, the reputation as one of the greatest singers in the history of the blues, rests almost entirely on these 18 sides. Skip was a huge influence on Robert Johnson and was feted by Eric Clapton His 'I'm So Glad' was covered by Cream and 'Devil Got My Woman' was the pivotal track that so hooks Thora Birch's character in the marvelous film Ghost World.
