| | Omar & The Howlers Southern Style CD - Import Omar & The Howlers Discography of CDs
Omar shakes up the Howlers' lineup yet again for Southern Style, yet the changes don't affect his sound much at all. Working with guitarist Stephen Bruton, bassist Paul Junior, drummer Steve Kilmer, percussionist Mark Hallman and organist Nick Connolly, Omar Dykes kicks out a set of swampy blues-rock that alternates between New Orleans grunge and tight Memphis grooves. Though the band sounds great, the lack of compelling material means Southern Style isn't appealing to anyone but specialists. ~ Thom Owens
Recorded at Arlyn Studios, Arlyn, Texas.

Southern Style album
$9.69 Blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan was already a legend when he was killed in a helicopter crash in 1990. Like all talents who die early, he has left behind a legacy of myths and stories concerning his complex life and persona. This very special video release -- which contains a 1983 ...
| | Tinsley Ellis Speak No Evil CD (2009)
Southern Style CD music
$14.95 Tinsley Ellis has worked hard since the early 1980s to establish himself on the contemporary blues scene. As a result, he has become one of the most consistent, and therefore quintessential, electric blues men. He's also a good songwriter in that he stretches the blues form as far as it will go, and occasionally he crosses into solid hard rock territory. On SPEAK NO EVIL, it seems as though Ellis has been listening to some of Robin Trower's early to mid-period records. And what seems to be at work on SPEAK NO EVIL is Ellis trying to push the blues form in a decidedly more rockist direction without losing its emotional feel. Check out the opening track, "Sunlight of Love" With its hard-driven wah-wah pedals and funky backbeat; one can easily imagine this track on Trower's TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY. Another number ...

| | Nick Curran Nitelife Boogie CD (2001)
Southern Style album
$13.69 If Fixin' Your Head's grainy, vintage sound turned a lot of heads, Nitelife Boogie will certainly put more than a few blues fiends into neck braces. Utilizing vintage recording equipment and a live performance aesthetic, guitarist/singer Nick Curran reinterprets jump blues classics along with rarities and originals in the exact style of the original recordings. This guy uses Murray's Superior Hair Dressing on his pompadour, wears some snappy vintage threads, and is backed by a tight rhythm section and two tenor saxophones. Scenesters will certainly appreciate his adherence to vintage style, but Curran's chops are no cute trend. Like a mad-blues hungry-scientist's clone hybrid of Little Richard and T-Bone Walker, it's uncanny how much Curran sounds like his post-war blues idols. But rather than coming off as a staid, neo-traditionalist, Curran imbues each track with a fresh urgency lacking in many modern blues releases. In fact, even on his ...

$11.89 For this luminous 2004 trio date, clarinetist/leader Don Byron collaborates with Jason Moran and Jack DeJohnette, two of the finest musicians in jazz. A firebrand with a kaleidoscope of styles, Moran emerged in the 1990s as one of the most innovative pianists of his generation, while DeJohnette's muscular, distinctive drumming has long placed him among the most influential drummers of post-'50s jazz. That Byron chose these players to complement his own multi-faceted explorations (which are influenced by traditional jazz, klezmer, chamber music, funk, and hip-hop) is enough to make one giddy even before the ...
