Japan's Quruli present their album JOZEE TO TORA TO SAKANATACH.
Joze to Tora to Sakanatachi is the soundtrack to the Japanese 2003 indie film of the same title and as a result, most of the music on this album, all composed by Quruli, is instrumental. Loosely meandering through a number of genres, it begins with the laid-back, dub-influenced "Joze No Theme," which sets up the weary, faintly disconnected ambience of the album, a sense compounded by the dusty blues of "Drive" and "Tsuneo to Joze"'s slow, wandering piano. Steel drums make a brief appearance in "Sagan," which appears to be required by law in all post-millennial Japanese indie flick soundtracks, and closing track "Highway" sounds like the tender hangover after the wild party of the previous album's "Suichu Motor." As Quruli's first release after their landmark 2002 album The World Is Mine, it's a retreat of sorts from its predecessor's electronically enhanced excesses, and forms a bridge to the more straightforward rock and folk-influenced Antenna, which followed in 2004. However, as a soundtrack album in its own right, it's an effective and atmospheric piece of work. ~ Ian Martin

Jozee To Tora To Sakanatach Soundtrack CD music
$13.95 Drifting from blues to ballads, the barefoot, mellow pop singer's second album includes "Tomorrow Morning" and an extra acoustic take of "Horizon Has Been Defeated."
Something of a slacker renaissance man, prototypical mellow surfer-dude Jack Johnson is not only a BILLBOARD-charting recording artist, but also a world-champion athlete and award-winning documentary filmmaker. On his second full-length album, ON AND ON, the sandy-toed singer/songwriter delivers a bare bones set of acoustic folk rock as soft and soothing as the Hawaiian breezes that serve as his inspiration.
As on his debut disc, BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES, Johnson serves up a groovy, yet slightly melancholy stew in his trademark breathy voice, which at its best recalls everyone from Steve Miller to Chet Baker to Evan Dando of The Lemonheads. This time around, however, the vocalist/guitarist isn't afraid to gently stir pinches of reggae, hip-hop, and Harry Belafonte style pop-calypso into his usual hippie jam-band roux. Mario Caldato Jr.'s ultra-sparse, live-sounding production carefully reveals the subtle sadness that lurks behind even Johnson's poppiest tunes, making ON AND ON the perfect album for a midnight beach party on the last night of summer vacation.
It took Jack Johnson two years to break mainstream with his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales, and by the time it went platinum in early 2003, his star power was unstoppable. Twentysomethings and college kids across the globe often compared Johnson's comfortable approach to the fiery Ben Harper, so when it came time to make a second album, Johnson basically picked up where the first album left off. On and On is a sparkling sophomore effort, carefully designed to avoid any kind of critical slump. Fans will enjoy Johnson's soothing ballads and boy-next-door charms, never looking beyond the surface of the songs themselves. Producer Mario Caldato, Jr. (Beastie Boys, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) hones Johnson's feel-good vibe, polishing his signature acoustic guitars to wave along to On and On's genre-blending sound. Johnson gets serious this time, too. He playfully expounds on America's sickening dependence on material things ("Gone") and its subconscious ...

$17.69 Formed in early 2000 by percussionist Brian Reilly and original guitarist Johnny O'Donnell, plans were laid for the unique sound for which Reilly is now known. Following the tragic death of Brian Reilly in August of 2000 and a subsequent loss of band personnel, O'Donnell sought to keep the torch burning, and enlisted guitarist/vocalist Patrick Moores and multi-instrumentalist Jim Kiley to help rebuild the group. After another parting of personnel, bassist/vocalist Chris Carter and drummer Brian Bruendl joined the fold, seeking to form the group's trademark booming rhythm section. Carter left the group in late 2002 to pursue other interests, and was aptly replaced by fellow Irishman and scene veteran Michael "Tinker" Tierney on bass and vocals. Following St. Patrick's Day 2001 Bruce Troeller joined on accordion-with-attitude to complete the sound. A few hundred pub gigs later, Reilly released their Debut CD in December of 2002. Self-produced by Troeller and the band, "Beyond the Pale" is a collection of Reilly originals and traditional ...
