| | Temple University Jazz Band Mean What You Say CD Temple University Jazz Band Discography of CDs
The big band featured on this CD may be comprised of college students, but the playing is at a professional level. The Temple University Jazz Band, under the direction of trumpeter Terell Stafford, performs recent post-bop originals plus Thad Jones' "Mean What You Say," Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance," "Nice Work if You Can Get It," and the joyful "Brotherhood of Man." In addition to the talented students, there are guest appearances (one apiece) by altoist Dick Oatts, trumpeter Jon Faddis (on "The Fadd"), Tim Warfield on tenor ("Basie in Mind"), trombonist Conrad Herwig (outstanding on "Quasi Modal"), and percussionist Sandy Perez, but surprisingly not Stafford. It is difficult not to be impressed by the students throughout this fine set, which is easily recommended to fans of modern swinging big bands. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Mean What You Say CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from ...
| | Red Garland High Pressure CD (1957)
Mean What You Say music CDs
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
One of the '50s great underrated albums, the distinctive piano playing of Red Garland, and the inspired tenor work of John Coltrane make HIGH PRESSURE a true jazz classic. In addition, Donald Byrd's deep, full trumpet tone adds refinement and sting to each track, and Art Taylor's sensitive yet hard-swinging drumming gels flawlessly with bassist George Joyner.
This is a supergroup playing at its very finest. Every note seems perfectly placed, and the improvisatory ...

| | John Wubbenhorst Facing Beloved CD (2003)
Mean What You Say album
$14.69 After issuing his debut solo album, Facing East, flautist John Wubbenhorst has reconvened his group to record a follow-up to their second album, Bansuri Dreams with Facing Beloved. The trio of Wubbenhorst, bassist Steve Zerlin, and guitarist Jorge Zamorano is joined by two South Indian percussionists, T.H. Subash Chandran, who plays ghatam (clay pot) and provides the vocal percussion known as konnakol, and Ganesh Kumar, who plays the South Indian frame drum called a kanjira. Although he has been studying Indian music and religion for most of his life, Wubbenhorst, a native of Norwalk, CT, is a Western musician by birth and background, and his goal is not to play traditional Indian music, but rather to fuse it with other elements, specifically jazz, to create a new world music hybrid. Thus, the ten-minute "John Beyond" pays tribute to an obvious precursor, John McLaughlin, another Western musician with a deep interest in the music of the East from a jazz perspective. "Irish Prelude" and "Irish Raga" draw specific parallels ...
