British street-punks the Adicts rage on the live album JOKER IN THE PACK, recorded in 1982 and 1983 in England.
If the Adicts have any single, overriding virtue, it's their sheer persistence. Formed in 1979 and hovering on the verge of a big step forward for much of the next eight years, the group never succeeded in raising themselves above the club circuit either in Europe or elsewhere, never found themselves graduating from a superstar's support band to superstars in their own right, and never scored the effortless sequence of hits that other bands half their age and ability used to muster. But the Adicts march on regardless, with regular new releases matching their back catalog classics, backed up every step by a devoted cult following for whom the boys in bowler-hats can truly do no wrong. Recorded just a few years beyond the outset of that journey, Joker in the Pack recounts two vintage Adicts shows that have since passed into legend. The first, Up Yer Tower, was recorded in 1982 at that year's Blackpool Punk Festival, an event that celebrated the mere five-year anniversary of the genre's national birth. It's a raw and grainy performance, filmed on a single VHS video camera, and a far cry from the polished madness that was the band's studio work of the time. But the 11 songs capture all the mayhem of an Adicts show, with an audience still in the first flush of punkish youth and the band reveling amid the interactivity that was the key to all their best shows. The second performance dates from just a year later, a show at the Manhattan Club. Again, the visual quality leaves something to be desired, with attempts at digitally enhancing the image not necessarily improving the actual picture. But it sounds good and, again, simply the chance to see the Adicts in their prime is enough to overcome any aesthetic failings the presentation may have. Certainly the group's live repertoire is as good as it ever got, with the duplication of five songs from the Blackpool unnoticed amid the joys of "Smart Alex," "Who Spilt My Beer," and "Bad Boy." Actual bonuses there are none, but the Manhattan Club show is followed by a pair of promo clips originally released on the UK/DK punk/Oi! compilation and a further vivid recapitulation of the riotous glee that was the Adicts' way of life. As if by now you needed to be reminded of that. ~ Dave Thompson
This brilliant 26-track live album is taken from two gigs, 'Manhattan Club' which was recorded in 1983 at The Manhattan Club & 'Up Yer Tower' which was recorded in 1982 at the now legendary Blackpool punk all dayer, painstakingly restored with previously unavailable numbers from the gig. Anagram. 2004.

Joker In The Pack
$20.39 Amid the plethora of Jam compilations and anthologies issued, the arrival of a full BBC sessions collection was long overdue. Past glimpses into the archive, after all, were never less than illuminating, and the knowledge that the single session (from February 1977) released on a Strange Fruit EP in the late '80s was merely the first of five broadcast between 1977-1981 had long frustrated fans and collectors. The Jam at the BBC doesn't quite answer every prayer. Three discs wrap up four of the studio sessions, together with three In Concert live broadcasts; absent, for who knows what reason, is a mid-1978 session for DJ David Jensen's show, featuring spiky renditions of "News of the World," "The Night," and the then-latest single "'A' Bomb in Wardour Street." Live versions of the first and last named offer vague consolation, but the lack of completeness is irritating. On the plus side, the growth of the band from the deeply indebted post-mod rockers who first emerged in the shadow of punk to the brightly individualistic successors to the throne of classic Kinks and Who is documented with unrelenting precision. The opening blast of eight songs from two John Peel sessions races past in a roar of snarling adrenalin; the first In Concert, from June 1977, likewise. A leap to 1979, however, finds the band furiously pushing the post-punk envelope, as "Eton Rifles" and "When You're Young" place a questing finger firmly on the pulse ...

Joker In The Pack
$12.65 Steve Stern may be an unfamiliar figure on the national folk scene, but he does have a handful of songs to sing and the gumption to put them all down on CD on Steam Powered Stern. The album kicks off with "Walkin' Through the Country," a jaunty song animated by banjo, fiddle, and acoustic guitar, and topped off by Stern's and Lisa Aguilar's vocals. It's the energetic performance here and on songs like "Hollowed Ground" that makes this material sparkle. The mostly acoustic arrangements, while similar across Steam Powered Stern's set list, vary enough from song to song to keep the listener's ears perked up. Steel guitar adorns "Light the Candle," while dobro highlights "I Know How to Love." At around 32 minutes, Steam Powered Stern is short, but this is still enough time to deliver 11 solid songs. Ultimately, the album has a "self-recorded in the basement" feel, meaning that the production lacks professional polish. For the folk-based material, however, this may be a plus, adding an air of authenticity to Stern's back porch vocal style. Indeed, even the title shamelessly recalls a down-to-earth classic, John Hartford's Steam Powered Aereo-Takes. For folk and folk-country fans looking for a batch of good songs performed with vigor, Steam Powered Stern will fit the bill. ~ Ronnie D. ...
