| | Wayne Newton In Person! CD Wayne Newton Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Recorded live at the Crescendo, Hollywood California in 1964. Includes liner notes by Bobby Darin.
Herein is the reason why Wayne Newton is such a popular entertainer. Wayne Newton in Person is a fun, energetic, old-time romp through classic songs, in which Newton hams it up and generally puts on a tremendous show. He gets serious at times ("What Kind of Fool Am I," "I Wish You Love"), but most of his performance is a hoot, combining his assured vocals and over the top lounge lizard mannerisms with frantically strummed banjos, big-band pizzazz, and fabulous background vocal arrangements (particularly on "Bill Bailey," which is genuinely exciting). It isn't weird enough to alienate the old-timers, but has enough daring and smirky moments to disarm the most skeptical hipsters. The album followed hot on the heels of "Danke Schöen" and its accompanying long-player, and includes a live version of that hit. Unaccountably, Wayne Newton in Person was not a big seller, which is unfortunate since it contains the most entertaining recordings he made in his big-band style. The album was later reissued by the Pickwick budget label with the title Live Hollywood Concert. ~ Greg Adams Wayne Newton In Person! Songs | 1. | Swanee | |

| In Person! Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The SQUAREST Show Ever at The Crescendo! The Crescendo was a hip spot to see great entertainers like Frances Faye, Torme, Joanie Sommers, yata, yata, ... but Wayne Newton's gig there was strictly for the unhip! All the tunes are either showboaters from the Jolson/Garland repertoires or the dreckiest "Danny Boy" you ever heard, complete with recitation (not by Newton). Wayne's in good vocal form, but this is real cheese. Submitted by Allen (Columbia, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Brilliant ! The sound quality on the takes is brilliant, just like the musical accompaniment. My favourite number is "What Kind of Fool Am I" but the whole selection is marvellous. This is my favourite CD of Wayne Newton ! Submitted by nicholas.rhodes (Paris, France) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

In Person! CD music
$9.89 Though Frank D'Rone must have appreciated the critical comparisons to Frank Sinatra, his 1960 Mercury LP After the Ball sounds more like the work of Bobby Darin, the deep crooner with the angelic face then making waves with his nightclub act and live record, Darin at the Copa. D'Rone, a former guitarist, also bears the mark of Mel Tormé (a true musician's singer), shaping his notes to fit the mood ...

| | Marianne Faithfull Collection CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
In Person! songs
$14.45 Recorded in the early 1970's. Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson.
Any Marianne Faithfull collection from her Decca years that doesn't include "As Tears Go By" is of special interest, as some listeners have never been convinced of her version's merits, regardless of its chart position. In this case, there are 40 songs here in a distinctly folk and pop/cabaret vein, mastered in state of the art sound, that capture some of Faithfull's best moments on various singles and her LPs, alas not in chronological order -- she became a better, less self-conscious singer as she went on, and the material here, running right up to her 1967 Decca single "Is This What I Get for Loving You," embodies some of her best work, nicely annotated and well mastered, and the price is definitely right as a budget double-CD set. ~ Bruce Eder
A couple of lackluster country albums notwithstanding, Marianne Faithfull spent the '70s drifting through the same world of twilight hearsay and shadow that engrossed Iggy Pop for so much of the time. Rumors that she was recording were followed by stories of disheveled collapse or abandonment; rumors that she was filming generally ended with ...
