Winner of the Grand Prize at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, Jacques Demy's valentine to the classic Hollywood musical is one of the most beloved romantic movies of all time. Every word of dialogue is sung in this glorious masterpiece starring the ravishing Catherine Deneuve as Genevieve, a shop assistant madly in love with Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a gas station mechanic. Their ill-fated love story unfolds to Academy Award-winner Michel Legrand's score, which features the Oscar-nominated song, "I Will Wait For You." In the innovative film THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, Jacques Demy pays loving homage to the Hollywood musical as well as the French melodrama. The film is shot in Cherbourg, France, using inventive cinematography and blazing colors and textures. Local life is rendered in pink, orange, green, and blue. Wallpapers and umbrella patterns, sweaters and hats, cars and gas stations--each element of the film contributes to the exuberant color and exalted mood. The film is also unique in the sense that every word is sung. The fertile collaboration between Demy and legendary French composer Michel Legrand reaches its climax in the light opera structure and lilting and memorable songs that make up the plot. Catherine Deneuve is the fresh and beautiful 16-year-old Genevieve, pining away in her mother's umbrella shop. When she falls in love with the charming local auto mechanic, Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), worlds collide. The young couple who, in their innocence, believe that love can overcome all obstacles, face many of them, including Genevieve's disapproving mother, an unexpected pregnancy, and Guy's induction into the French Army. Joy and melancholy suffuse every aspect of the film, which explores both the transience of love and the persistence of affection--motifs that Demy would further develop in his follow-up musical, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT. Theatrical release: December 16, 1964.
Shot on location in Cherbourg, France.
The film has no spoken dialogue and consists only of music composed Michel Legrand.
For 20 years, the film was only available in faded prints. However, a three-strip negative print was discovered in an archive and Jaques Demy's widow, Agnes Varda, had the movie restored with funding provided by the French Ministry of Culture. In addition, Michel Legrand supervised a new, Dolby stereo remixing of the soundtrack. The restored version of the film was released theatrically by Zeitgeist Films in New York City April 5, 1996. Umbrellas Of Cherbourg Reviews: "...Bedecked in gorgeous pinks and blues....A sumptuously restored print and novelty value unabated by the passage of three decades..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG stands as a rare example of the kind of pure cinema that is increasing hard to fine. It's wonderful to have it back..."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "[Y]ou'll soon be engrossed in atherine Deneuve's mismatch..."
-- Daniel Webb, Total Film "[I]t is remembered as a bold original experiment, and now that it is restored and back in circulation, it can also be remembered as a surprisingly effective film, touching and knowing and, like Deneuve, ageless."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "A still stunning tribute to the MGM musical....The entire show is stolen by a luminescent performance from Catherine Deneuve."
-- Uncut Staff, Uncut "Deneuve is sweeter than sugar as the beleaguered heroine, but Anne Vernon, as her foxy, grasping mother, is a worldly, unexpected delight."
-- Kate Stables, Sight and Sound

Umbrellas Of Cherbourg Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Wow This performance is top drawer by all. It raises the level of musicals to high drama. Submitted by terryliraine (CA,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Terrific Movie ransferred to DVD by Amateurs The motion picture is the same wonderful all singing (including all dialog) movie that was released in 1965. I don't review story details. My review only deals with the quality of the film transfer and sound. While it is claimed it is "Leterboxed" and "Widescreen", this is false. It is also claimed to be released in it's "original 1.66:1 format", this is also untrue. This DVD is, for all practical purposes, FULL SCREEN! The "very" thin black lines at the top and bottom hardly qualify as be either widescreen or letterboxed. Furthermore, if they didn't "zoom in" during the transfer and CUT OFF THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE TITLES, maybe it would have come out to 1.66:1. In the meantime, having been a projectionist for nearly forty years, I recall running that film when it came out and it WAS NOT 1.66:1, it was more like 1.85:1 or 1.75:1. It is said to have been a "restored" version. Lucky Us! Submitted by a reviewer (FLA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy ...
