WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark her as unique. The set of standards here, including "Let's Fall In Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "Pick Yourself Up" among others, is enhanced by fine session musicians and Johnny Mandel's tasteful arrangements. It's widely accepted wisdom that the early, rawer material of Youssou N'Dour had an edge he's never been able to recapture since becoming a major international star. Certainly his more recent studio recordings lack the urgency and energy of the material here, which was recorded in the early '80s when he was the frontman of Étoile de Dakar, before personnel splits left him heading up the new Super Étoile de Dakar and starting to make his first global inroads. It features ten cuts of the former collegiate Dixieland band (which made no less than six LPs in four years at the height of the folk revival!) at its most gimmicky and good-natured. Almost an in-joke, Washington Square, with its title and the band's name, evokes images of an earnest strolling coffeehouse band, and the repertoire here reflects that, from the New Christy Minstrels' "Green, Green" and "Walk Right In" to the Weavers' "If I Had a Hammer" to Richard Harris' "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" to the inclusion of not one but two Bob Dylan tunes, all of them done in prime, campy Dixieland style. This two-fer from Beat Goes On features a pair of out-of-print Spirit LPs: Son of Spirit and Farther Along. Both originally released in 1976 on Mercury, these 22 tracks include some fine compositions, including "Stoney Night," "Magic Fairy Princess," and Lennon/McCartney's "Yesterday." This is an enjoyable reissue, but the absence of two original key members, vocalist Jay Ferguson and bassist Mark Anders, is felt.
