| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Crooner CD music
$22.25 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing ...

| | Diana Krall When I Look In Your Eyes (1998)
Crooner CD music
$14.75 WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical. WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark her as unique. The set of standards here, including "Let's Fall In Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "Pick Yourself Up" among others, is enhanced by fine session musicians and Johnny Mandel's tasteful arrangements. While Krall is more than comfortable ...
| | Taj Mahal Phantom Blues CD (1996)
Crooner music CDs
$11.39 PHANTOM BLUES was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
An eclectic bluesman would seem to be a contradiction in terms, but Taj Mahal, who has moved through the worlds of folk, rock, and pop to reach his present categorization, fits the description, and here he takes several pop and R&B oldies that came from blues roots -- "Ooh Poo Pah Doo," "Lonely Avenue," "What Am I Living For?," "Let the Four Winds Blow" -- and returns them to those roots. He also calls in such guest stars as Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt, who have more than a nodding acquaintance with the blues, to assist him. The result is progressive blues hybrid that treats the music not as a source, but as a destination. ~ William Ruhlmann
Live Recording
Recorded at Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, California on May 8-14, 1995 and House Of Blues Studios, Encino, California.
Personnel: Taj Mahal (vocals, dobro, harmonica); Bonnie Raitt (vocals); John Porter (guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar); Jon Cleary (guitar, piano, Clavinet, Wurlitzer organ, background vocals); Jon Brion (guitar, chamberlin); Johnny Lee Schell (guitar, background vocals); Dean Parks, Eric Clapton, John Parks, Joe McGrath (guitar); Mike Campbell (12-string guitar); David Hidalgo (accordion); Bernard Anderson , Joe Sublett (tenor saxophone); Darrell ...

| | Morgy Craig Hoosier Mystic CD (1999)
Crooner album
$15.05 An excellent hard bop tenor-saxophonist based in the Midwest who passed away in the latter part of the 1990s, Morgy Craig recorded relatively little during his life. The release of this live performance, therefore, is an important historic event. Craig sounds pretty strong and creative as he digs into eight standards in a quartet with pianist Phil DeGreg, bassist Bob Bodley and drummer Steve Barnes. Craig, other than a few slight hints of Sonny Rollins, had an original sound and a hard-driving yet relaxed improvising style. He sounds ...
| | Conrad Herwig Hieroglyphica CD (2001)
Crooner CD music
$14.65 Conrad Herwig follows up Unseen Universe with another all-original set, this time paring down to a quartet. It's not common for a trombonist to lead a small-group session as the only horn, but Herwig, with his technical facility, expressiveness, and timbral range, is uniquely capable of doing ...

| | Rough Guide To Youssou N'Dour & Etoile De Dakar CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Crooner songs
$13.69 It's widely accepted wisdom that the early, rawer material of Youssou N'Dour had an edge he's never been able to recapture since becoming a major international star. Certainly his more recent studio recordings lack the urgency and energy of the material here, which was recorded in the early '80s when he was the frontman of Étoile de Dakar, before personnel splits left him heading up the new Super Étoile de Dakar and starting to make his first global inroads. The Cuban influence that had pervaded Senegalese music was still apparent at the beginning of N'Dour's career, and it can be heard in tracks like "Absa Gueye" and "Jalo," while the epic "Thiapathioly," a big West African hit, shows the start of the transition to a more individual sound, the juddering, polyrhythmic mbalax, with its sabar drums ...
| | Village Stompers Washington Square CD (1964)
Crooner album
$7.89 Washington Square is a straight reissue of the 1997 CD reissue of the Village Stompers' 1964 album. It features ten cuts of the former collegiate Dixieland band (which made no less than six LPs in four years at the height of the folk revival!) at its most gimmicky and good-natured. Almost an in-joke, Washington Square, with its title and the band's name, evokes images of an earnest strolling coffeehouse band, and the repertoire here reflects that, from the New Christy Minstrels' "Green, Green" and "Walk Right In" to the Weavers' "If I Had a Hammer" to Richard Harris' "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" to the inclusion of not one but two Bob Dylan tunes, all of them done in prime, campy Dixieland style. This really is just an album of solid good-time drinking music. Why the Stompers' versions of "Blowin' in the Wind" or "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" ...
| | Son Of Spirit/Farther Along CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Crooner CD music
$17.79 This two-fer from Beat Goes On features a pair of out-of-print Spirit LPs: Son of Spirit and Farther Along. Both originally released in 1976 on Mercury, these 22 tracks include some fine compositions, including "Stoney Night," "Magic Fairy Princess," and Lennon/McCartney's "Yesterday." This is an enjoyable reissue, but the absence of two original key members, vocalist Jay Ferguson and bassist Mark Anders, is felt. Most listeners would be better served with Epic/Legacy's 16-track Best of Spirit or the 1970 masterpiece The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. ~ Al Campbell
Digitally remastered collation of two original LP's on a single CD from the veteran San Francisco based rock band. They first appeared in 1975 and 1976 and featured the first time the band regrouped after the departure of lead singer ...
