One of France's most talented and trailblazing heavy metal bands, Nice's Scarve arrived at a true milestone with the eclectic black metal of their third album, 2004's Irradiant. In fact, if the album has one glaring fault, it's assimilating too many extreme metal devices into its many-colored spectrum, but since when is variety a bad thing? At least as long as the artist in question knows when to say "when," and, except for their blatant Meshuggah tribute number, "Asphyxiate" (with its off-kilter drum patterns, minimalist tonality, and the Swedes' own Fredrik Thordendal providing the solo), Scarve usually do, tempering their restless black metal style-hopping with just enough control to keep the songwriting in focus. The deadly fusion of Strapping Young Lad's restless creative spirit and Samael's industrial black metal clearly inspires initial offerings like "Mirthless Perspectives," "An Emptier Void," and the title track, all of which also bristle with unexpectedly musical guitar solos -- a welcome source of dynamic contrast -- and never boring exchanges between the band's versatile, dual lead vocalists. The awesome "Hyperconscience" rides a vertigo-inducing melody over its pounding drums, the surprisingly harmonic "The Perfect Disaster" is both complex and accessible, and after indulging a hyperactive burst with the succinct "Molten Scars" (featuring Defleshed's Gustaf Jorde), Scarve stretch their legs on two very impressive and more extensive, prog metal excursions to wrap things up. All of which makes Irradiant an incredibly mature and visionary collection of songs that open-minded metal heads are sure to enjoy. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. When Bruce Dickinson launched his solo career with 1990's Tattooed Millionaire, it was clear that not everything he did on his own would resemble his work with Iron Maiden. Some of the British headbanger's solo output has been very forceful and Maiden-like, but some of it is has been lighthearted, glossy pop-metal that wouldn't be out of place on an album by Bon Jovi, Winger, or Def Leppard. Assembled in 2001, this excellent, well-rounded collection reflects Dickinson's diversity as a solo artist. The Best of Bruce Dickinson is full of the type of intense and aggressive, yet melodic fantasy metal that put Maiden on the map; headbangers who hold Dickinson's work with Maiden in high regard should have no problem getting into fantasy metal gems like "Tears of the Dragon" (a single from 1994's Balls to Picasso), "Silver Wings," and the title song of 1998's The Chemical Wedding. Meanwhile, Dickinson's pop-metal side is nicely represented by "Born in '58" and Tattooed Millionaire's title song. Is The Best of Bruce Dickinson the last word on his solo career? Definitely not. For one thing, it's missing the singer's inspired cover of David Bowie's "All the Young Dudes," which was one of the best things on Tattooed Millionaire. Also missing is "Shoot All the Clowns," an important single from Balls to Picasso. But while this 63-minute CD falls short of ideal, it is consistently exciting nonetheless -- and it is the most logical starting point for those exploring Dickinson's solo output for the first time. ~ Alex Henderson
