Enthusiasts' personal preferences aside, The 21st Century Guide to King Crimson, Vol. 1: 1969-1974 (2004) is the first of two four-disc volumes gathering the entire recorded output of the band in its variety of personnel. Each CD contains highlights from a specific era, either in the studio or live, and the material is presented in chronological order. Disc one tracks through In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), In the Wake of Poseidon (1970), Lizard (1970), and Islands (1971). Suitably, most of the debut effort is presented from recently recovered master tapes that had been unavailable for all prior pressings of the CD. At the beginning of the Pretenders LEARNING TO CRAWL Chrissie Hynde sings, "I'm not the kind I used to be, I've got a kid, I'm 33, baby!" The bravado in the way she delivered that line, however, couldn't disguise the fact that she was also dealing with the back-to-back drug overdoses of two of her founding bandmates (one an ex-lover). The resulting album, unsurprisingly, deals at least in part with pain and loss. ("Back on the Chain Gang" LEARNING TO CRAWL's first single, was in fact an explicit memorial).
Given the circumstances surrounding the making of the album, it's amazing that on balance it's the band's most rounded effort. This is due to Hynde's particularly strong songwriting, and a standout performance by new guitarist Robbie MacIntosh, ...

For some, percussion is the art of rhythm. For Gino Robair, it is the art of resonance. Be it bowing a cymbal, setting a snare drum into motion with an E-Bow or a motor, or even playing a "faux dax" (a variation on Hans Reichel's daxophone), Robair's art is here in a class of its own, far removed from the application of hand or stick to skin -- or from the electronic manipulations of Günter Müller and his followers. His playing is a program by itself, but John Butcher's multiphonics and controlled saxophone feedback offer the perfect mates, to the point where on several occasions the listener is left wondering who plays what. It seems that the sax player's lip smacking is organically fused to the percussionist's styrofoam manipulations, and the amplified sax feedback to the ethereal tune of the bowed cymbal. New Oakland Burr is the duo's second outing and consists of 16 short improvisations (nothing over five minutes). Each piece presents a single highly concentrated idea. The result is a series of dense and consistently attention-grabbing assemblages of squeaks, squeals, grunts, and wheezes. Whoever came up with the track titles is better than most experimental music reviewers at describing the music. ...
