Studios, Houston, TX; NoddFactor Studios, Houston, TX. Photographer: Mike Frost . A veteran of 10 albums at the age of 26 and an acclaimed member of Houston's Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro is much more complex than his surface or the simple intro of THE LIFE OF JOSEPH W. MCVEY may imply. Prolific output isn't the only thing he has in common with hardcore legends such as Too Short and Rap-A-Lot icon Scarface; Z-Ro also cuts his hard-edged street delivery with a haunting, almost hypnotic, introspection. As this album reveals, Z-Ro deeply feels every word he sings. With "I Hate U B***h," the song is not so much a misogynistic rant as the pained, primal gut-reaction of a devoted man who's been hurt by the object of his affection (the line after the title is "I never thought I would say [it]"). On the melodic "Why?," he ponders the insanity of the thug life, wishing he could be loving and simple, spiritual and comfortable, but uncertain of how to find his escape. THE LIFE OF JOSEPH MCVEY reveals a tortured soul who concurrently knows himself and doesn't understand a thing, making this an achingly honest record that deserves to break Z-Ro through to new audiences. Life Of Joseph W. Mcvey
$11.39 Introduction to the Jolly Bankers:The Jolly Bankers are a punchy string band consisting of guitarist Kristin Andreassen, fiddler Laura Cortese, and banjo player Pierce Woodward. Their first CD, Death & Taxes, was an underground hit thanks to beautiful, quirky renditions of traditional songs like "The Uncouldy Day" and "Cripple Creek".Their second CD, Tax Return, features a three-fiddle Cajun tune, some original songs, a nearly-in-tune piano, an old Irish ballad, some dial-surfing on the AM radio and a genuine bunch of clatter on some kitchen pots and pans by guest drummer Chris Merenda of the The Mammals. All recorded more-or-less live with an unspoiled gritty groove and vibey vibe. Band Timeline:July, 1999 -- Laura & Kristin meet in the basement of the Ethier's home in Mission, British Columbia. The two of them were dancing with Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble at a festival that weekend. Kristin asks Laura whether to cut two feet off the bottom of her glitter dress, and Laura asks Kristin about boys. Kristin scratches out the only jig she knows on the fiddle and Laura plays some kick-ass reel. The general pattern of their relationship was established.August, 2002 -- Kristin meets Pierce at the Cutting Edge of the Campfire Festival at Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pierce plays his song "Farm Pond" with Mike Merenda backing him up playing brushes on a fiddle case (Kristin thinks she remembers this). Pierce tells Kristin that he's trying to decide whether to continue a career in journalism or continue playing music. The determining factor will be potential positive impact on the world in general.September, 2002 -- Laura meets Pierce at dawn when the Mammals van pulls up to Kristin's farmhouse ...
