Marina de Van's impressive debut feature is a haunting and riveting exploration of a young woman's disturbing fascination with her own body. Directed by Marina de Van. Cast: Marina de Van, Laurent Lucas, L‚a Drucker. After suffering some deep gashes to her leg from an accidental fall, Esther (Marina de Van), a young business writer, becomes preoccupied with her body and skin, especially her wounds. At first she merely caresses her arms, pinches her excess skin, or traces the cuts on her legs, but it isn't long before she is incising wounds directly and aggressively into her own body. Her boyfriend (Laurent Lucas) becomes understandably concerned and angry, but his inability to empathize alienates Esther, and she seeks reclusion to explore her newfound practice. With increased urgency, she turns an unapologetic knife or razor upon her own skin, alternately gorging on the vampiric ecstasy or the brutally masochistic annihilation of her own flesh and blood. The film stays ominously quiet as to what and why this is happening--social, professional, biological pressures all seem relevant but somehow insufficient explanations--and Esther is too indifferent to question her new predilections, too servile to them. While deeply influenced by the work of David Cronenberg (THE FLY, NAKED LUNCH, CRASH), the film is more reliant on feminist and avant garde performance art from the sixties and seventies, namely the work of Marina Abramovic, Ana Mendieta, Carolee Schneemann, and Hermann Nitsch. Intensely graphic, IN MY SKIN examines the body as a boundary and as a battleground for the worlds it stands in between. Theatrical Release: November 7, 2003 (NY) In My Skin Reviews: "[A] compelling skin-crawler....This is out there on its own -- strange, scarred, beautiful."
-- David Cox, Uncut "[T]here's a sincerity of intention driving this disturbing film that gives it a captivating socio-political relevance and genuine horror that the work of many of de Van's contemporaries lack."
-- Emilie Bickerton, Sight and Sound "...As unrelenting an exploration of isolation and dissociation as Roman Polanski's REPULSION..."-- Stephen Holden, New York Times "...IN MY SKIN is an experience you won't easily shake..."

In My Skin Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Cuts deep... Not a film for the squemish, this stylish & compelling film is reminisent of early David Cronenberg films. It asks a lot of question & answers very few, leaving you the viewer to draw your own conclusions. It skirts on the edge of grotesque but never falls into exploitation, which is surprising bearing in mind the subject matter. Fine acting & slick direction make this a cut (no pun intended) above your average horror film. Submitted by Marty (Somerset, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
definitely worth buying amazing film that dives into a new topic for a movie, the majority of movie viewers, i feel, have seen or heard of cannibal films, but how often do you hear of someone is completely obssesed with cutting, consuming, and preserving their own flesh? Great independent film and the bonus shorts in the special features make it worth buying. Submitted by dustamazing (Mount Airy, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
