Sigo Amando album
$11.15 Monchy & Alexandra combine salsa & merengue music with American pop on HASTA EL FIN. Largely consisting of passionate love songs, this 2004 release features stunning vocal performances, tight musicianship, and resplendent production. As with many Latin albums, the percussion is the backbone of the ensemble and the driving force behind the music. For example, on "Esperando Estar Juntos" and "No Te Prometo Que Si (Tratare de Olvidar)," the congas, bongos, and guiro lay down a taut groove, while Monchy & Alexandra's legato voices soliloquize overtop. On HASTA EL FIN, Monchy & Alexandra do not offer up any of the wilder, more celebratory, forms of merengue and salsa (a la Tito Puente); instead, this is scaled-down romantic music in the bachata vein. Because the music is so intimate, HASTA EL FIN is better suited for a candle-lit dinner than a dance hall.

| | Aventura God's Project CD (2005)
Sigo Amando music CDs
$13.85 Since its formation in the Bronx, New York in 1994, Dominican boy band Aventura has been steadily expanding its sound toward a style that incorporates hip-hop, R&B, rock, merengue, and reggaeton, while still retaining strong traces of traditional bachata. GOD'S PROJECT is the culmination of Aventura's stylistic expansion, and is the group's most mature, diverse, and accomplished album.
The sounds of bachata--the quartet's foundation--are still prominent, especially on "Ciego de Amor," which features a cameo by Antony Santos, one of the Dominican Republic's leading bachata artists (not to be confused with Aventura's own Anthony "Romeo" Santos). The group also ventures deep into reggaeton territory on the likes of "Ella y Yo" (which stars reggaeton kingpin Don Omar). Various international flavors work their way into the mix, particularly the samples of Asian music that crop up here and there, and the strains of traditional flamenco on "Un Beso." All of this is wrapped skillfully in a sound and attitude that bursts with contemporary pop savvy.

| | Billy Cobham Funky Thide Of Sings CD (1975)
Sigo Amando songs
$11.89 Principally recorded at Columbia Records Studio, San Francisco, California. Originally released on Atlantic (18149).
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
After a string of successful solo efforts, Billy Cobham began to slip into mediocrity beginning with this recording, originally released in 1975. While elements of funk were always a part of his band's sound, it was now the primary focus. "Panhandler" stands out as the session's most memorable composition, while Milcho Leviev contributes nicely on "Moody Modes." Cobham fans will want to seek this out for the extended drum solo "A Funky Kind of Thing," which stands as one of the most original drum solos he ever recorded. Of particular interest here is the presence of John Scofield, who had replaced John Abercrombie. Not up to the standards of its predecessors, but a worthy purchase, especially with the reissue on CD. ~ Robert Taylor
Reissue producers: Donald Elfman, Naomi Yoshii.

| | Figures On A Beach Standing On Ceremony CD (1987)
Sigo Amando songs
$9.69 Aside from the glorious opener "No Stars," a swelling, romantic tune with a memorable melody and gossamer production, the full-length debut by Figures on a Beach is a bit of a dud. The group's two indie releases from 1983 and 1984 were complex and melodic synth pop with a slightly arty edge, but the comparatively slick production of this album (by New York remixer Ivan Ivan, who had recently done good work with the fairly similar though more airy Book of Love) makes these songs sound flaccid and underwritten. Even worse, the arrangements sound terribly dated in retrospect -- it's possible that this very early-'80s brand of art rock sounded dated even in 1987 -- which detracts further from Christopher Ewen's solid melodies. Songs like "Rhythm" and the mildly over-the-top "Pagan Gift" feel like empty exercises, and even some of the better songs could stand a thorough remixing. Compared to what had come before, Standing on Ceremony is a disappointment. The self-titled 1989 follow-up was an improvement, however. ~ Stewart Mason
