Get Inside is guitarist Johnny A.'s second solo effort, appearing after nearly four years of touring and performing in support of the promising, effortlessly professional, 2001 effort Sometime Tuesday Morning. Inside is an album of tasteful instrumentals, tinged with the various styles A. has absorbed as a veteran sideman. Bold opener "Hip Bone" features Latin-flecked percussion, and A.'s impossibly clean tone; rich in atmosphere and detail, it could be an instrumental take on Los Lobos. It's just an appetizer -- the guitarist handled his own production, and throughout Get Inside he proves to be as smooth behind the mixing board as he is on the fret board. A.'s reverb-drenched licks on the bluesy Johnny Rivers' gem "Poor Side of Town" just completely melt out of the speakers, while his drier tones on the title track expertly control the grit meter. "Bundle of Joy" is exactly what you'd expect, and "Ignorance Is Bliss" backs up that bouncy sentiment with Little Feat-inspired playing and a driving rhythm. It's hard to pick the best track here, but there are a couple of strong candidates at its center. The seemingly mild-mannered "Krea Gata" goes absolutely ballistic in its midsection, A.'s guitar shrieking madly as his blues solo utterly loses its mind, and "Wind Cries Mary" becomes a jaunty trip through pauses filled with splotches of sunlight. Garret Savluk's jazzy trumpet solo is a great touch. The palpable energy in these tracks makes the album's dreary cover art an odd choice. Don't let Johnny A.'s sourpuss cover shot fool you -- despite its well-placed moments of introspection or melancholy, Get Inside is a comforting place to be. ~ Johnny Loftus

| Get Inside Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) A very interesting listening album Ya know, I've also been playing guitar for almost 45 years and I gotta tell you I am almost always impress by Johnny A's smooth approach. The guy can play. I cant say the guy is the next Les Paul or Chet Atkins however, he's an excellent example of what a guitarist should strive to be. Smooth, and exciting at the same time. As for prior reviews, I'm simply not going to make comparisons beyond the ones I already have above. I find his music to be well produced, his guitar work flawless on this, and the band behind him seriously cool and tight tight tight. This album is smooth groove sexy. Oh and for the guy playing 40 year up above...where's your solo album and why havent I heard of it? Submitted by Paul (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
uggg... I have played guitar for 40 years. This guy doesn't cut it at anything. He stabs at many styles and masters none. don't waste good money on this. I laughed at "better than Jimmy Page" statement. Obviously someone doesn't know much about guitar playing. johnny A. has some potential if he would get some 'direction'. but thats my 2 cents. take it or leave it. I wish i had not purchased this. i'm a new fan! I went to see the Robert Cray band live, and Johnny A was opening for Cray for about an hour. After hearing Johnny A live, I immediately became his fan. He opened with the very appropriate smooth, bluesy/jazzy tune "Sway a Little", which is track 10 on this CD. After he warmed up and established his sound in the auditorium, his second song was "Krea Gata" (Track 7). This tune has to be one of the prettiest and most striking instrumental guitar pieces I've heard since SRV. It starts off with the most silky smooth guitar picks while his drummer uses the brushes to provide a slow jazzy/bluesy backing; then, toward the middle of the song, the sticks replace the brushes, the rhythm changes, and Johnny starts turning up the intensity until he gets us completely caught up in a rock-n-roll solo that gets almost out of control, at which point Johnny brings it to a screeching halt and resumes his smooth bluesy picks to his drummer's brushes, bringing the piece to a graceful finish. At this point, the crowd is wide awake and going crazy, caught completely by surprise. This seems to be the spirit of Johnny A's style. He is such a rare combination of styles, sounds, and influences that you can't help but be surprised by his creativity and mastery of guitar-playing. I was amazed at how he's able to juice such a wide and diverse spectrum of sounds from a single (custom-made) Gibson guitar. You will hear this diversity throughout this CD. The CD has a really good rhythm. It's not too rockish, not too bluesy. It has a good pick-up. The energy flows from every tune, and each is full of beautiful melody. Don't be surprised if after you have finished playing the entire CD, you will want to go back to track 1 and play the whole CD again. This is a guitar master that ranks right up there with the big boys and deserves every bit of recognition. Submitted by deniscit (NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Guitar Work Johnny A. is one of my favorite guitarists ever. One of the few that I think is better than Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin). If you like this then also buy his first CD "Sometime Tuesday Morning". Then if you like that too, then go see him live. I've seen him live once and his version of "Red House" (Jimi Hendrix) is awsome! Submitted by zeppelinfan224 (Riverside, RI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Johnny A., 'Gets Inside' on his second disc Boston native Johnny A. delivers the goods on his second cd release 'Get Inside' on Steve Vai's Favored Nation label.
This is an amazing guitar instrumental disc. Johnny mixes rock, blues, jazz and more with his very distinct guitar playing.
He covers Johnny River's 'Poor Side of Town'and Jimi Hendix's 'The Wind Cries Mary' but he adds his own style and sound to the songs and makes them his own. It's very refreshing.
I saw him live three years ago and he was amazing. Check out this disc and see why.

$20.99 With a generally deadpan singer and another guy behind a bank of synthesizers, the Pet Shop Boys just aren't built for live albums, even if the songs are exquisite, there's an orchestra behind them, and some very special guests appear. While the duo can deliver in a live setting, the experience relies heavily on the visual, check the Performance or Somewhere concert videos for proof. Still, for fans, Concrete must exist since it captures the duo's May 2006 appearance at London's Mermaid Theater, an invite-only affair with the BBC Concert Orchestra as backing band. The song selection doesn't read like a greatest-hits compilation because save "It's a Sin" and "West End Girls," everything here was originally recorded with various sized orchestras. Singer Neil Tennant is obviously proud of the high-profile arrangers the duo has worked with in the past and pays respect to them between the music with special mentions for Craig Armstrong, Angelo Badalamenti, and Anne Dudley whose former partner ...
