AFRICAN SUITE features a 20-piece string orchestra from the Youth Orchestra of the European Community led by Daniel Schnyder.
African Suite presents Abdullah Ibrahim's regular trio with bassist Belden Bullock and drummer George Gray along with a large string section drawn from the Youth Orchestra of the European Community. Daniel Schnyder crafted the arrangements, which are orchestral reworkings of some of Ibrahim's compositions roughly spanning a 25-year period. The strings serve to heighten the evocative globalism of Ibrahim's work, in which the pianist's South African origin, Islamic faith, longtime European residence, and jazz immersion are incorporated with a dazzling imaginative breadth.
Here perhaps more than ever before, Ibrahim's piano is a subtle tool, coaxing the spare, singable melodies into being and generally hovering over the proceedings like a wise, almost detached presence. Both the pianist and the orchestra get a chance to shine alone, Ibrahim on "Aspen" and the orchestra on "Blanton." The latter, dedicated to the late Ellington bassist Jimmy Blanton, sounds uncannily like a jazz bassist bowing an arco solo.
The rhythm section gets a bit busier on the slow-grooving "Ishmael," the rollicking "Tsakwe," the 6/4 sketch "Damara Blue," and the brooding funk piece "Tintinyana." For sheer eclecticism and catchiness, nothing beats the "All Blues"-style "Barakaat" and the African-soul-jazz finale "The Mountain of the Night." But the strings are integrated more effectively on the calmer numbers, especially "The Call" and an absolutely breathtaking arrangement of "The Wedding." One only wishes something could have been done about the audible hiss on parts of the recording. ~ David R. Adler

CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.

Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. An expermentation in fusing jazz and rock sounds, David Axelrod's 1968 album SONGS OF INNOCENCE is a very early example of the sound that would come to be known as jazz fusion.
In 1968, jazz producer and arranger David Axelrod--best known at that point for his hits with Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley--was on the staff at Capitol Records' home base in Hollywood. In his spare time, Axelrod teamed up with his friend Dave Hassinger across town at Reprise Records and recorded two bizarrely wonderful classical-rock mash-ups, MASS IN F MINOR and RELEASE OF AN OATH, under the band name the Electric Prunes. (The original Prunes, garage-rock one-hit wonders, had essentially split up, but Hassinger and Reprise still owned the band name.) PRAYER MEETIN' is vintage Jimmy Smith. With unflappable beatkeeper Donald Bailey, the liquid guitar lines of Quentin Warren, the underrated sax stylings of Stanley Turrentine and the unusual inclusion of a bassist in the person of Sam Jones (Smith usually plays his own bass lines with the foot pedals), the sound on this album is thick, textured and interactive. However, there's no dilution of the intimacy and deep soul associated with Smith.
The jazz/blues amalgam laid out in the title track, "Red Top" and "Picknickin'" is impossible to resist--fat grooves given flight by the keyboardist's intense, syncopated flurries. The ballad "I Almost Lost My Mind," featuring a gorgeous solo by Turrentine, and the calypso boogie of "Stone Cold Dead In The Marketplace" add variety to the set. The one seeming throwaway, a swing version of "When The Saints Go Marching In," is more than compensated for by two additional tracks not included on the original LP, "Lonesome Road" and "Smith Walk." All in all, this disc is a fine example not only of Smith's prodigious abilities, but of how well he works with an ensemble to create beautiful, compelling music.
