SPECIAL 20, named after a favored harmonica, is the first solo release from Haynes Boys frontman Tim Easton. Easton makes it clear he's one of the rare breed of songwriters--Steve Earle, John Prine, Lucinda Williams--who sing as well as they write. More restrained than the excellent eponymous Haynes Boys release of 1997, SPECIAL 20 shows an artist at the height of his powers. From the rousing opening track "Just Like Home," recorded on a four-track at Easton's Columbus, Ohio house, to the rhythmic and celebratory "Hey Rosine," SPECIAL 20 is that rare Americana-styled release that's honest and revealing without being sentimental. Those enamored of Easton's roots-rock style are directed to REVILED! by Burn Barrel, a group featuring all the Haynes Boys backing singer/songwriter J.P. Olsen.
Recorded at Alex The Great Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.
Personnel: Tim Easton (vocals, acoustic 6- & 12-string guitars, electric guitar); Sean Beal (vocals, guitar, baritone guitar, accordion); Phillip Park (slide guitar); Al Perkins (pedal steel guitar, dobro, banjo); Tramp (mandolin); Teresa Fyfe (violin); Jim Hoke (bass harmonica); Brad Jones (Hammond B-3 organ, harmonium, bass, glockenspiel); Matt Surgeson (bass); Mickey Grimm (drums, washboard, oil can, percussion, loops); Ross Rice (drums); Justing Crooks (snare drum, foot stomp); Robin Eaton (chime); Annie Light-Brown, Clare Surgeson (background vocals).
CMJ (12/4/98, p.3) - "...his songs condense the emotional weight of full novels into three- or four-minute nuggets....While your head will appreciate the depth of his work, your soul will appreciate his boot stomping sing-a-longs." Dirty Linen (10-11/99, p.88) - "...Easton is a clever songwriter who sometimes seems to be thinking out loud, while other songs have characteristics of short stories....nobody can accuse this fine album of overstaying its welcome." | | Jayhawks Rainy Day Music CDs (2003)
Special 20 CD music
$17.35 You never can tell what Americana/alt-country heroes the Jayhawks will do next. They started out with two voices in singer/songwriters Marc Olsen (sp?) and Gary Louris. After Olsen split, Louris spearheaded the band's most angular, least country album THE SOUND OF LIES, but RAINY DAY MUSIC turns the tables yet again by presenting the softest, most acoustic, ballad-oriented side the band has ever shown. Things start out fairly perky with the sparkling, jangly folk-rock of "Stumbling Through the Dark" and the poppy "Tailspin," ...
| | Amy Rigby Til The Wheels Fall Off CD (2003)
Special 20 music CDs
$13.95 The consistent strength of Amy Rigby's albums sometimes makes them just a bit difficult to write about -- each of her albums is loaded with witty and telling songs about the occasional pleasures and frequent pitfalls of life as a single woman past 30 (or, these days, past 40), and her slightly rickety but powerful voice and smart, tuneful melodies make the perfect vehicle for her material. Rigby's fourth album, Till the Wheels Fall Off, fits right in alongside her previous three sets, so what is there to say about this disc that hasn't been said about the others? Well, just as important as the consistency of Rigby's music is the fact she knows how to find any number of variations on her basic themes, and like the best singer/songwriters, she knows that each person can have any number of stories to tell, and she knows how to tell them with humor, clarity, and an emotional honesty ...
| | John Hiatt Beneath This Gruff Exterior CD (2003)
Special 20 songs
$14.19 "Some people call it depression and I call it a song." That simple observation from "Uncommon Connection," the rollickingly catchy opening track of songwriter/singer John Hiatt's 2003 release BENEATH THIS GRUFF EXTERIOR, sums it up quite sweetly. Hiatt's been channeling glorious depression through the muse since the early '70s. This release marks his first release with the Goners, a four-man outfit specializing ...
| | Greg Trooper Floating CD (2003)
Special 20 album
$14.79 So finally Greg Trooper gets a deal on what amounts to a real label. And while it's a label normally associated with bluegrass and superpickers, that's fine. Sugar Hill has issued records by Guy Clark, too. It's about time. On Floating, Trooper reveals once again that he is an artist of the old school, one for whom development is a journey, not a destination. Each album stronger than the last -- which is saying something when you've never released a bad one -- is an exercise not only in the language of lyric writing and melody sculpting but also in the intimate communication that is supposed to occur between singer and listener. Trooper's songs on Floating are the musical equivalent of the poetry of somebody like Kenneth Patchen. His eye is keen, looking for the smallest, seemingly ...

Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 4: K-Earth 101 FM features 25 pop holiday tunes from the '50s, '60s, and '70s, including Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas," the Beach Boys' "The Man with All the Toys," Lou Rawls' "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," Otis Redding's "Merry Christmas, Baby," and Bing Crosby and David Bowie's "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy." This is a great way to collect these songs of the season in one package. ~ Al Campbell
Another installment in Collectables' The Ultimate Christmas Album series, volume four gathers a mix of well-known and offbeat holiday tunes, including Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas," the Platters' "Winter Wonderland," and Perry Como's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." Brook Benton's "You're All I Want for Christmas," Percy Faith's "Christmas Is," and Otis Redding's "Merry Christmas Baby" are some of the collection's soulful highlights, while Santo & Johnny's "Twistin' Bells" and Stan Freberg's "Christmas Dragnet" add some novelty to the festivities. Though it's a somewhat uneven collection, The Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 4 has enough interesting and classic moments to make it worthwhile for anyone looking to go beyond the season's basic music. ~ Heather Phares
