We Will Bury You
$13.49 Husker Du really hit their stride on this sprawling 1984 release. ZEN ARCADE established the band as one of the leading lights on the American indie scene. The 23 songs are loosely linked to a narrative structure about a young man who leaves home, only to discover the world to be as oppressive and full of hypocrisy as home life had been. The songs show a marked increase in variety.
Along with classic Mould scream-fests ("The Biggest Lie," "Chartered Trips"), there are goosebump-inducing ...
| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
We Will Bury You
$9.09 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.
"We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is another track that poignantly examines the race and class struggles of urban America. This song is made up of more ...
| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
We Will Bury You
$12.55 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated by sleazy groans and horrifying screams, still induce nervous tension despite the passing years. To hear Alan Vega, an Elvis caricature out of time, crooning "Girl" is unsettling enough. When he acts out the desperation of "Frankie Teardrop" over the strictly controlled minimalism of Martin Rev's ...
| | Generators From Rust To Ruin CD (1998) Extended Play
We Will Bury You
$11.19 This features the complete original EP plus singles and previously released tracks.
Considered by many Electric Frankenstein aficionados to be the definitive statement from the band, Listen Up Baby! was out-of-print after the demise of Man's Ruin records until TKO came along and not only reissued the EP, but fleshed out the original six tracks to a full-length. Technically, the material was culled from the split disc the band did with the Hookers in 1998; it has the same songs in the same order as on the original EP. The disc marked a return to the fold for original vocalist Steve Miller, and this lent a renewed enthusiasm to the band's usual, upbeat Ramones-meets-Heartbreakers-meets-Kiss couldn't-have-originated-anywhere-but-New-York retro-punk, and while a lot of the band's material does tend to sound similar, you could do a lot worse than start your Electric Frankenstein collection with this set. ~ Brian O'Neill

| | Reflections: The Best Of George Shearing CD (2000)
We Will Bury You
$10.15 Recorded between 1992 and 1998. Includes liner notes by Alyn Shipton.
Subtitled The Best of George Shearing (1992-1998), Reflections truly is just that. This excellent compilation culls tracks from seven discs recorded while Shearing was in his seventies, placing him in different contexts performing a variety of mostly familiar material. His solo take on Dave Brubeck's "Summer Song" is especially beautiful, and the trio arrangements of "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" are standouts. However, it's the varied instrumentation that keeps the listener tuned in. The gorgeous accompaniment of the Robert Farnon Orchestra elevates and enriches "Oh, Lady ...
