The British blues-rock boom was such a big deal at the end of the 1960s that plenty of also-ran bands got the chance to fill out the bottom of concert and festival bills, and also to record. Sam Apple Pie were among them, and their self-titled debut album didn't offer much in the style that was out of the ordinary, though it did possess basic competence. You needed more than basic competence to make a mark, however, even in a genre that could be as hidebound as British blues. Sam Apple Pie didn't have those extra special somethings, relying too much upon stock blues riffs and good-time energy that might have been effective in a concert setting, but are pretty dull on record. If any influence from their peers seems strongest, it's early Fleetwood Mac (in both their stinging blues modes and their quieter, more reflective ones). Songs like "Stranger," "Sometime Girl," and "Winter of My Love," with its swooping slide, downcast lyrics, and minor keys, definitely recall some of the Mac's early tunes. But this is way below the level of the Peter Green-helmed Fleetwood Mac in singing, playing, and songwriting, though at least the band wrote every song on the album except one ("Tiger Man [King of the Jungle]," where the macho bluster is so callow that it's uncertain whether it's a parody or a sincere attempt at the real thing). Certainly the standout track, though the least typical one, is "Annabelle," with a soft jazz-classical-rock blend -- and little of the blues -- that's, again, very reminiscent of some of Fleetwood Mac's work in the 1969-1970 period. The sudden detour into a jazzy jam with flute in "Moonlight Man" is another promising avenue that, alas, wasn't explored elsewhere on this release. The 2003 CD reissue on Repertoire adds mono single mixes of two of the songs, "Tiger Man" and "Sometime Girl," as bonus tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger
Following her massive success in 2003 with her brilliant singles 'Free Me' & 'Maybe' & her 2004 smash 'I'll Be There' everyone's favorite former Spice Girl releases her highly anticipated album entitled 'Free Me'. Recorded throughout 2003 in the UK & Spain, 'Free Me' is a diverse, energetic album that oozes sophistication. A marked maturity of sound is featured on this record which Emma herself describes as having, "a real 60's influence". The album features collaborations from such esteemed hit makers as Cathy Dennis, Yak Bondie, Simon Ellis & Henry from Zero 7 & is Emma's most accomplished achievement to date. A great pop record from a great pop star. 12 tracks including all three of the smash hit singles mentioned above, along with a 16-page full color booklet with some great photos. 19 Recordings/Universal. 2004. | Free Me Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Schwing! Although she also makes a dance version of 'Free Me' which I prefer, this lighter version has a similar sound to other performers I like, such as 'Swing Out Sister'. Her vocals provide the signature sound. Submitted by terrywa (Sammamish,WA.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Really good I definitely recommend this album to any fan of the Spice Girls or Emma's first album! I just wanna say that it kind of reminds me of a Christmas album or something you can play at a party. It was worth the money though, and you'll find yourself singing along a lot! Emma, she has really proven herseld as a solo artist This CD is great! i love this album, she has come out with her own style, wrote songs on the album, and just really proven herself as a solo artist. The popish feel this album brings to the table is something that can be listen to anytime of the day. At the moment my favorite song is "Free Me" the first time i herd it i was hooked, and i can't get enough of it. All i can say is she is no longer going to be known as the under estimated one of the spice girls. Great album!!! Submitted by spice_diva84 (Norwalk, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
who said that Emma Bunton couldn't do good music? Emma Bunton's new album (the second) arrives to prove to the world that she is one of the most talented musician-singer-song writer of this days!
This album, with a gr8 booklet and cover (very original by the way) is the best of pop-perfection that we could have asked for!
She proves herself totally on 12 wonderfull tracks, all potencial singles, catchy, radio and hears friendly and with gr8 production:
1. Free Me - The title track. Is a great start to the album. It proves that Emma has a brilliant voice that suits this lovelly track, with 60's inspired sound, sexy rythm and lots of strings that puts you in a good mood! 9/10
2. Maybe - Set to be one of the biggest songs of the year! This is Pop-more-than-perfect! It's HIGHLY catchy and addictive! Be aware... the song has lots of "ba da da da da" that are set to be one of the most sang lines of the year! 11/10
3. I'll be There - Simple, catchy, and fun! It's all very montown and 60's pop with clear influence from Stevie Wonder! 8/10
4. Tomorrow - Another pop-perfection! It's a brilliant song, with confusing lyrics, but highly catchy at the same time. Emma's voice in so perfect that hurts! 10/10
5. Breathing - Oh My Lord!! One of the most beautiful tracks that I've ever heard! It's just so lovelly, with lots of instruments, great lyrics and a lovelly and good voice from Emma! A standard track that should be a single! just perfect! very romantic. 10/10
6. Crickets Sing For AnaMaria - well well well... a weird title, even more weird lyrics, BUT annoyngly catchy! loads of bossa nova influence and latin rythms throughout it... it was a single only for the UK, but it should be released world-wide! Fantastic! 10/10
7. No Sign Of Life - The worst track on the album! Although it comes with the best lyrics and with a good vocal performance from Emma, the song is a bit annoying.. but it's good and popy to hear when you're crying out your heart of a broken relationship... 6/10
8. Who the Hell are You - Emma gets pretty cool and simple in this one, but it's highly catchy too! A bit like tomorrow but with better and more simple lyrics! great voice, great melody! 8/10
9. Lay Your Love On Me- What happens when you put Emma Bunton herself and Cathy Dennis (writter of the smash hits "Toxic" from Britney and "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" from Kylie) on a studio? The answer is surprisingly good: Pop in it's best performance! One of the best tracks on the album, perfect for a single or a concert! 10/10
10. Amazing (featuring Luis Fonsi) - God! such an lovelly ballad! Emma has her voice at it's best in this one, and Luis matches perfectly! Quite boring when you're upbeat, but fantastic when you're all in love. 8/10
11. You Are - Popy, good, simple, catchy! a good pop song. Emma is quite perfect here! 9/10
12. Something So Beautiful - This is something more than just so beautiful! It's a ballad, it's Emma, it's romantic, it's soft, it's perfect! 10/10
