English version features a bonus disc that contains rare tracks and two videos.
On Chimaira's second full-length album, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, the Midwestern nu-metal outfit charges out of the gate with an electrifying mix of brutally direct Sabbath-esque guitars, the scariest death metal howls this side of Morbid Angel, and double-kick-drum patterns so fast and clean they make Slipknot's drummer sound like the guy who played on "Louie Louie." Unlike many of its similarly hard-edged contemporaries, Chimaira features the added novelty of a full-time member who is credited with "lead electronics." Not simply a DJ, knob-twister Chris Spicuzza adds a distinctive palette of ambient noise to the proceedings, which in combination with the sonic mayhem spewed forth by the rest of the band, often makes for a uniquely disconcerting, yet strangely addictive listening experience.
Produced by Ben Schigel and mixed by Colin Richardson, Chimaira mange to praise those metal giants that came before them, while drawing up the blueprint for the new wave of the likes of "Down Again", "Pure Hatred" and "Cleansation". As the appetite for 'real' metal is returning, post-nu, now is the time for Chimaira. This specially packaged version of "Impossibility Of Reason" includes a bonus disc of previously unreleased tracks, two videos and limited edition slipcase.
Recorded at Spider Studios, Strongville, Ohio.
Chimaira: Mark Hunter (vocals); Rob Arnold, Matt DeVries (guitar); Jim LaMarca (bass); Andols Herrick (drums); Chris Spicuzza.
Producers: Ben Schigel, Mark Hunter, Rob Arnold.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.CMJ (5/12/03, p.26) - "...A sweltering, audio torture chamber of dizzying rhythms, jackhammer riffs and barked vocals....Chimaira gets a little moody, but it works completely..." $18.79 The follow-up to the hit album THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, Chimaira's self-titled third CD continues the group's quest to become the most pummeling, no-frills, downright scary metalcore band on the planet. With the addition of new drummer Kevin Talley, who adds an even greater degree of rhythmic precision and aggression, Chimaira further refines its unique combination of old-school thrash and modern death metal.
"Nothing Remains" takes harmonic cues from Scandinavian black metal, delivering horror-movie-worthy chord progressions with a speed and drive equal to the most mind-numbing industrial beats. "Left for Dead" opens with military-style snare drum rudiments before bursting into a scathing denunciation of greed that recalls early Metallica. Though Chimaira's electronic elements are more subtle than on previous albums, well-placed sound effects add to the record's intense spookiness, particularly on the epic seven-and-a-half minute closer "Lazarus," a chilling, yet strangely sensitive, narrative about a friend's suicide.

| | Insomnium Above The Weeping World CD (2006)
Impossibility Of Reason album
$14.05 When bad boys mature, they don't necessarily quit being bad boys, but they do become more complex and multi-faceted. They may evolve into the deep-thinking Pedro Almodóvar of All About My Mother, Talk to Her and Bad Education rather than the younger Almodóvar, who had so much fun with screwball dark comedies like What Have I Done to Deserve This and Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down. They may evolve into the Marlon Brando of The Godfather, instead of the punky young Brando of A Streetcar Named Desire. And in death metal, that quest for maturity has given us the nuanced world of melodic death metal -- a world that death metal's stubborn, myopic purists denounce as watered down, but a world in which engaging albums like Above the Weeping World are created. Anyone who doubts that death metal has more than one flavor (ultra-fast, amelodic and consistently vicious) needs to give this 52-minute CD a very close listen. Insomnium's sense of melody and harmony is striking. Exquisitely crafted, the songs on Above the Weeping World demonstrate that the term "melodic death metal" is no oxymoron for Insomnium. The most extreme thing about this Finnish band continues to be Niilo Sevänen's lead vocals; some singers in melodic death metal (and its very close relative symphonic black metal) offer an extreme-vocals/clean-vocals contrast, but the vocally uncompromising Sevänen sticks to a straight-out-of-hell type of growl. Unfortunately, Sevänen still makes the lyrics hard to understand; that was a problem on Insomnium's 2003 recording Since the Day It All Came Down, and it remains a problem ...
