(2 Customer Reviews)
Bolstered by real friendship and genuine respect between its contributing artists, ONE JUG OF WINE, TWO VESSELS by Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova is the rare collaboration that meshes two singular visions seamlessly. With no prior knowledge, a listener might mistake its chief compadres--fellow Omaha singer-songwriters Conor Oberst and Jake Bellows--as members of the same band. Specializing in a drunken alt-country with a loose swing, the two take turns singing leads and playing supporting roles on their own and each other's songs. Mike Mogis pins the songs with his trademark aural draperies--from glistening vibraphones and honeyed pedal steel on "Poison" to the cello scrapes on "Black Comedy." Each track is a winner--particularly the charmingly wasted "I'll Be Your Friend" with its sax solos and sloppy guitars spilling like teqila from a dropped tumbler.
Bright Eyes: Jake Bellows, Conor Oberst (vocals, guitar); Casey Scott (whistlling); Tim Haes, Mike Kratky (guitar); John Hischke (saxophone); Orenda Fink (trumpet); Nick White (keyboards); Doug Wray, Heath Konntz (bass); Bo Anderson, Roger Lewis (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 - "This split EP finds two Omaha, Nebraska bands making indie-folk prettiness..." Q (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Neva Dinova hold their own with Omaha's more celebrated son; 'Tripped' and 'Poison' are both gems." Uncut (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "It's a fascinating union...Bellows' warmly weatherbeaten delivery nuzzling close to the fireside, Oberst's a blast of cold air." CMJ (p.7) - "A little bit country in parts and a little bit melancholy indie rock in others, the six tracks all shimmer with a lo-fi warmth." One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels CD music
$9.75 While 2002's LIFTED was the record that blew Bright Eyes and its hyper-poetic frontman, Conor Oberst, into the public's consciousness and up the Billboard charts, its predecessor, FEVERS AND MIRRORS, put him on the next-big-thing map. The third ...

One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels music CDs
$7.35 Coming directly after the Desaparecidos' full-tilt READ MUSIC/SPEAK SPANISH, which was Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's successful experiment with melding his usual minor-key teenage angst into the context of a full-tilt noisy rock & roll band, the brief Bright Eyes EP THERE IS NO BEGINNING TO THE STORY is a quick return to form. While ...

| | Milt Hinton Here Swings The Judge CD (1975)
One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels songs
$12.09 Milt Hinton was probably the most recorded bassist in the history of music as a whole, but relatively few recordings were released under his own name. This LP was his first as a leader (if you don't count an earlier duo LP with Jo Jones) and it consists of private recordings that Hinton made with tenor saxophone great Ben Webster prior to Webster's departure for Europe in 1964; the remaining tracks come from a Harry Lim-produced studio session featuring Budd Johnson, Frank Wess, Jon Faddis, John Bunch, and Jo Jones. Although the sessions by Hinton and Webster are informal in nature, they are very rewarding. Their duo performance of "Sophisticated Lady" takes on a new degree of subtlety compared to Webster's ...
| | Harpers Bizarre 4 CD (1969)
One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels album
$12.25 Recorded in Hollywood, California in 1969. Originally released on Warners (1784). Includes liner notes by John Peterson.
Digitally remastered by Bob Irwin (Sundazed Studios, Coxsackie, New York).
The final Harpers Bizarre album before the band split in 1969 (they reunited briefly six years later for the album TIME GOES BY) contains more self-penned songs than their previous collections, and fewer of their trademark baroque arrangement flourishes. Highlights include the agreeably loopy "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas," from the movie of the same name, and the beautiful, country-flavored "Cotton Candy Sandman (Sandman's Coming)." This expanded set also includes bonus versions of Harry Nilsson's "Poly High" and the group's take on gospel composer Thomas Dorsey's "If We Ever Needed the Lord Before."

| | Drive-By Truckers Gangstabilly CD (1998) Remastered; Digipak
One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels CD music
$11.79 The Drive-By Truckers don't need an agenda to be a good band. Sure, Southern Rock Opera more or less anointed the Truckers as a smarter, more attentive Lynyrd Skynyrd, and critics, in turn, made them famous for all the wrong reasons. And while critics tossed around adjectives like "brash" and "raunchy" and dug out their riffs on Southern rock revival and the renovation of country, Gangstabilly, DBT's debut, went largely overlooked. No mock-rock operas or anxious, insistent Southernism here -- Gangstabilly keeps its charm by keeping it simple. Whereas post-Pizza Deliverance DBT tended to veer into weathered tailgate-party twang, Gangstabilly is a swamp of mushy drums, scraggly acoustics, and pedal-steel whimper -- a catalog of trashy but telling details and broader yet personal pangs. NASCAR, monster-truck ...
