| | Wynton Marsalis Magic Hour CD Wynton Marsalis Discography of CDs
Additional personnel includes: Diane Reeves, Bobby McFerrin (vocals).
In some ways, THE MAGIC HOUR marks some major changes for Wynton Marsalis; after what must seem like a lifetime on Columbia, it's his first record for Blue Note. He's also working with a group of younger musicians in a new quartet. And after a series of conceptual pieces, classical performances, big-band outings and the like, it's a return to the small-group format. At the same time, listening to Marsalis's precise-but-effortless trumpet elocution and natural swing, it's easy to feel like nothing has changed in the trumpet doyen's musical heart of hearts since his first recordings in the early 1980s.
Things start off with a blues that reaches back to Marsalis's New Orleans roots, with the leader making saucy interjections in and around Dianne Reeves's guest vocal. "You and Me" is a spare piece framed by rhythmic clapping and articulated subtly by pianist Eric Reed. The modified second-line rhythm of "Big Fat Hen" and the swinging shuffle of "Free to Be" place the ball squarely in Marsalis's wheelhouse, with the expected results. The title track that closes the album is a frenetic tour de force, with Marsalis pushing himself to the top of his range, and the band scurrying through the jazz equivalent of "Flight of the Bumblebee." Wynton the swinging trumpet man sounds glad to be back.

Magic Hour album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

| | Diana Krall Girl In The Other Room CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Magic Hour CD music
$12.29 It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest departure to date; THE GIRL IN THE OTHER ROOM is almost entirely devoid of the jazz standards that constituted her previous repertoire, and it contains her first recorded batch of original songs. It's possible that new husband Elvis Costello, who co-wrote all six of those tunes with his wife, was the agent provocateur. It's also feasible that Costello, who has previously recorded Mose Allison material and palled around with Tom Waits, nudged Krall toward such choice selections as Allison's bluesy plaint "Stop This World" and Waits's cocktail rhumba "Temptation." Nevertheless, Krall delivers them--like the rest of the songs here--in a misty, laconic ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Magic Hour album
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over ...
