One of the chief progenitors of the R&B idiom and a pioneer of the small-combo "jump" blues style so popular during the Forties, vocalist and altoman Louis Jordan is justly remembered as a performer who defined an era. Gathering material from Jordan films Beware (1946), Reet, Petite And Gone (1947) and Look Out Sister (1948), plus a selection of different "soundies" mainly shot for the black cinemas of America, this video offers a fascinating portrait of this true visionary of music, who's songs sound as irresistible today as they did over five decades ago. Having forged a singular style for himself by practically inventing the R&B genre, Louis Jordan subsequently produced some classic material that has gone down in the musical history books. This release includes a selection of early material culled from various films, including LOOK OUT SISTER and REET, PETITE AND GONE.

Louis Jordan - Films And Soundies movie DVD
$9.55 Neither an innovator nor an iconoclast, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison is simply one of the bluesiest, hardest-swinging, and downright tastiest jazz musicians of the 20th century. A consummate sideman who worked steadily throughout his career (even getting gigs recording soundtracks in the '50s), Edison created music that always reflected his journeyman aesthetic and unerring sense of swing. Recorded in 1956, Sweets is one of the quintessential Edison albums showcasing the former Count Basie bandmember at the height of his abilities with a stellar ensemble of other Basie-ites, including tenor ...

| | New York Dolls - Pre-Crash Condition: Live From The Royal Festival Hall DVD (2004)
Louis Jordan - Films And Soundies video
$12.25 Barely surviving the ravages of time, The New York Dolls managed to reconvene for a spectacular comeback show in 2004. Original members David Johansen, Arthur "Killer" Kane, and Sylvain Sylvain were aided by a few auxiliary members for this show, although in true Dolls form the performance was laced with tragedy as Kane passed away shortly afterwards. Ex-Smiths singer Morrissey invited them to play at an event he was curating in London, and the surviving members decided to bite the bullet and take to the stage. The results perfectly demonstrated how the band have been such a huge influence on a wide variety of performers, with Johansen and co. tearing up the stage with a youthful vigor that belies their real ages. Among the tracks performed were "Looking For A Kiss," "Trash," "Another Piece of my Heart," and of course "Personality Crisis."
In 2004, Morrissey invited the legendary ...
