William Ackerman Passage CD
First of the Singer Songwriters CD music This is part of Windham Hill Records' Essential Windham Hill series.
William Ackerman's genre-defining fourth studio album is quintessential New Age guitar bliss. Included on PASSAGE are four brand new compositions, and, like a poet who never feels his work is complete, Ackerman has reworked four pieces from his previous three albums, IN SEARCH OF THE TURTLE'S NAVEL, IT TAKES A YEAR, and CHILDHOOD AND MEMORY. Originally released in 1981, PASSAGE was among the earliest New Age digital recordings. An enchanting journey of sound, the album also benefits from the contributions of genre innovators George Winston, Darol Anger (Bela Fleck, David Grisman), and Dan Reiter (Kitaro, Ali Akbar Khan).
Recorded at The Music Annex, Menlo Park, California.
Personnel: Will Ackerman (guitar); Darol Anger (violin); Dan Reiter (cello); Robert Hubbard (English horn); George Winston (piano).
Photographers: Ron May; Anne Ackerman.

John Jenkins John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell CD (1957)
First of the Singer Songwriters buy CD music The second (and best) of John Jenkins' two sessions as a leader features the altoist in a quintet with guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Dannie Richmond. Sounding at times like Charlie Parker (with touches of Phil Woods and Jackie McLean), Jenkins easily keeps up with his better-known sidemen and plays the boppish music with plenty of creativity, emotion, and excitement. After listening to the high-quality set, one wonders why Jenkins did not make it. ~ Scott Yanow
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.

Calla Calla CD (1999)
First of the Singer Songwriters CD music Beware, this is a masterpiece! First album of the New York-based trio Calla is a truly unique experience. It is even in many aspects the quintessence of inventive post-rock: the power of silences, the fragility of slowness, the apparently simple melodies, the peculiar ambiance. Nothing is amiss: all the ingredients are in the stew. The samples and the bass create a city-like atmosphere, and somewhere in the mist of the pattern thus proposed, the guitar with its clear effect-free sound takes the listener to a trip in the desert amidst the cacti and the sand, the red rocks, and the dried rivers: a real thrill. But, the parts of the instruments are not so clearly defined, since the samples are sometimes conveying tribal voodoo undertones instead of urban ones, like in "Tarentula" and "Elsewhere" for example. But what is sure is that you are constantly bounced from one place to another, held hostage in a plane flying over different lands, making your mood change at any time. Sadness and purity are intermingled for the sake of beauty; and even if it is so cool a disc, it is paradoxically one of the most exhilarating albums of the '90s. ~ Romain Guillou
Recorded at Adelphi, Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York.
Calla: Aurelio Valle (vocals, guitar); Sean Donovan (trumpet, keyboards, bass, programming); Wayne B. Magruder (drums, percussion, programming).

Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 3: Wogl 98.1 Philadelphia CD (1996)
First of the Singer Songwriters buy CD music Collectables' Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 3: K-EARTH 101 FM is another quirky mix of standards and relatively obscure holiday tunes. Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," Perry Como's "Home for the Holidays," and Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" fall into the latter category, while the Impressions' "Amen," Mavis Staples' "Christmas Vacation," and Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds' "Chrissy the Christmas Mouse" are prime examples of the former. The Supremes' strangely egotistical "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me," Darlene Love's "All Alone on Christmas," and José Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad" are some of the other highlights from this interesting, if somewhat scattered, holiday collection. ~ Heather Phares
