Moving from their longtime home at Touch & Go to the renowned 4AD label, NYC art-rockers Blonde Redhead have made telling sonic adjustments, trading in their noisy, abrasive edge for a refined, often orchestral sound. The trio--Kazu Makino and twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace--makes the transition clear from the get-go on "Elephant Woman," which features Makino's breathy vocals over a backdrop of harpsichord, strings, and light percussion. Melancholy is certainly the main theme of this album, as exquisitely exemplified by the title track, a somber, keyboard-driven piece that borders on chamber music. However, just when the proceedings verge on the morose, the band emerges with two upbeat songs, the swirling, Stereolab-like "Pink Love" and the guitar-driven grandeur of "Equus," revealing that they can still rock when the mood strikes them.

Entertainment Weekly (3/19/04, p.65) - "[A] volatile mix with a touch of fidgety elegance." - Grade: B- Uncut (4/04, p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "These are seductive confections, all blurred strings, magical chimes and tear-stained metaphysics." CMJ (4/04, p.35) - "Densely layered and orchestrated, with swelling strings and keyboards often burying the twin guitars and drums of Kazu Makino and brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace, MISERY has a cinematic quality, as if its songs were art-house shorts." Mojo (Publisher) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A]s the album title suggests, they've carved a bleak and beautiful album; their best, in fact." | Misery Is A Butterfly Music Misery Is A Butterfly Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) falling man is a choice track saw these guys (and chick) open for interpol and i must say it is quite a different style of indie music. the one vocalist sounds like a whining version of the dude from flaming lips. the chick can really wail. the music itself is heavy on the synth bass, and the drumlines are simple, but catchy. falling man is an outstanding song; so too is the last track (i believe equus) Submitted by name642 (Raleigh, North Kakalaki) Was This Review Helpful? | | Brian Jonestown Massacre Zero: Songs From The Album... CD (2000)
Misery Is A Butterfly
$9.49 Taking into consideration the last time we heard from the Brian Jonestown Massacre (1999's one-off EP of country-folk ramblings, Bringing It All Back Home Again), longtime fans of the BJM might still be a little taken aback by the songs on this 36-minute EP at first, as this is somewhat of a departure from what BJM shaman and group leader Anton Newcombe has previously written and recorded with a revolving-door membership of sidemen and -women. The six songs collected here were reportedly set aside for the band's long-awaited follow-up to 1998's Strung Out in Heaven, but after they were reportedly rejected by TVT Records, Newcombe opted to exercise a clause in his contract that allows him to release material on his own Bomp!-distributed Committee to Keep Music Evil imprint. That is why the title and artwork (with its colorful pinwheel flowers) goes out of its way to imply that there are "zero" songs from the album Bravery included here. The whole shebang starts slowly, with the sound effect of a computer modem connecting (certainly a sign that the BJM are embracing the modern age more than ever) before "Let Me Stand Next to Your Flower" finally ...

Misery Is A Butterfly
$12.79 In 2000, 3 Doors Down achieved major success by adding a rough-and-ready Southern-rock edge to angsty Creed-style neo-grunge. With its third album, SEVENTEEN DAYS, the Mississippi band strips its sound down even further, often adding a grinding, metallic edge. "Right Where I Belong" begins with a de-tuned, serpentine riff that is equal parts Soundgarden and Superjoint Ritual, while "Let Me Go" is a dark, mid-tempo groover reminiscent of Staind's biggest radio hits. "Landing in London" is a weary life-on-the-road ballad that recalls both Kiss's "Beth" and Bob Seger's "Turn the Page," and, in fact, features the Michigan rocker on guest vocals. A collection of memorable songs that finds frontman Brad Arnold addressing themes of alienation and strained relationships in a Ronnie Van Zant-like whiskey-soaked voice, SEVENTEEN DAYS should appeal to those fans who like their arena rock deep-fried.
The stronger songwriting on 3 Doors Down's multi-platinum sophomore effort, Away from the Sun, was encouraging, especially after the rote post-grunge of their 2000 breakthrough, "Kryptonite." But the hit single "When I'm Gone" resonated in particular with American military personnel and their families, who identified with lyrics like "Hold me when I'm here" and "Love me when I'm gone" as deployment to Iraq became imminent in spring 2003. That populism guides Seventeen Days, the Mississippi band's third full-length album. Its liner notes connect to a cross-section of U.S. culture, thanking NFL quarterbacks and major league ballplayers alongside Tim McGraw, Metallica, Dale Earnhart, Jr., and "our troops everywhere." And Away from the Sun's Southern rock flourishes have been broadened to create an album that's purely American, built from meaty power chords and everyman lyrics ...
