| | Michael Fracasso Pocketful Of Rain CD Michael Fracasso Discography of CDs
It's easy to raise expectations too high after reading all of the nice things critics have written about Michael Fracasso. On his fifth album, A Pocketful of Rain, the singer/songwriter, rock & roller, and pop tunesmith offers up a dozen songs in his clear, emotive tenor. He's joined by an impressive guest list including vocalists Patty Griffin and Eliza Gilkyson, and a revolving group of supporting musicians including bassist George Reiff and drummer Rob Sanchez. One of the strongest cuts is the opener, "All or Nothing," a spare lament beautifully sung against the backdrop of acoustic guitar and a steady bass. Griffin's harmony here and elsewhere adds another layer to the mix, intertwining with Fracasso to create a moving blend of voices that perfectly underlines the emotion of the song. Other strong cuts include "Devil's Deal," with Griffin providing a bluesy undercurrent to Fracasso's high lead, and the title cut, a catchy bit of pop. The only small complaint is that the album notes and lyrics are difficult to read on A Pocketful of Rain, which, since singer/songwriter lyrics are important, is a bit irritating. But Fracasso gets the musical portion of the program right, so all else will be forgiven. Fans and singer/songwriter aficionados will want to pick up a copy. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Pocketful Of Rain album
$14.19 Even by the most lackadaisical release schedule, three decades is a bit of a wait between a group's first and second albums. Of course, this pause in the discography of progressive-country cult heroes the Flatlanders can be explained by the fact that each of the three members spent the time in the middle becoming respected solo singer-songwriters. Still, it sounds like no time passed at all between the posthumously released MORE A LEGEND THAN A BAND and the reunited bliss of NOW AGAIN, as the reunited band's mix of traditional country, Townes Van Zandt-like troubadourism, and cowboy mysticism remains unquestionably intact and vital.
The group's three-part harmonies are employed to maximum effect on the sparkling, '60s-pop-inflected "Julia." "Waving My Heart Goodbye" and "My Wildest Dreams Grow Wilder ...
| | Tift Merritt Tambourine CD (2004)
Pocketful Of Rain CD music
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait It Out."
Blessed with a voice reminiscent ...

| | Kathleen Edwards Back To Me CD (2005)
Pocketful Of Rain songs
$12.35 Kathleen Edwards excels at simple denim-and-leather country rock that recalls the best moments of Freedy Johnston and Lucinda Williams. Like these artists, Edwards writes mournful vignettes from the POV of down-at-the-heel small-town folks, with a rueful tenderness that suggests compassion beyond her years. Edwards sings in a pretty-yet-tomboyish voice that conveys longing, frustration, and often a vivifying redemption. Tom Petty sideman Benmont Tench and Sarah McLachlan's mentor Pierre Marchand help out on keyboards, while guitarist (and occasional co-writer) Colin Cripps provides ...
| | Eliza Gilkyson Paradise Hotel CD (2005)
Pocketful Of Rain album
$15.05 On her last album, 2004's Land of Milk and Honey, Eliza Gilkyson, long based in Austin, TX, made some of her most explicitly political statements and, for her trouble, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album, as well, it seems, as critical email from some of her fans. (Like Natalie Maines of Dixie Chicks, Gilkyson seemed ashamed that the President of the U.S. was from Texas, and while she acknowledged the criticism on her Website, www.elizagilkyson.com and ">, she also made a point of noting that 57,288,974 Americans, at the very least -- the number of people who voted for Senator John Kerry for President in 2004 -- were on her side.) If Land of Milk and Honey was her pre-election treatise, Paradise Hotel is, inevitably, her post-election lament, one she sings in a mature, smoky voice that is occasionally reminiscent of Emmylou Harris, three years her senior, and often of Lucinda Williams, ...
| | Warren Zevon Envoy CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Pocketful Of Rain CD music
$10.89 While moderation was never Warren Zevon's strong suit, his efforts to clean himself up in the early '80s resulted in two of his finest albums, 1980's literate but corrosive Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School and the following year's explosive live set Stand in the Fire. It seemed as if the wired chaos of Zevon's personal life had been channeled into his art on those LPs, but after another bout with the bottle and another attempt at sobriety, Zevon tried another approach at merging his music and his life on 1982's The Envoy. On The Envoy's best songs, Zevon tackles his dangerous appetites head on; "Charlie's Medicine" is a chilling requiem for a drug dealer who used to sell him dope, "Jesus Mentioned" is a spare but curiously moving meditation on the death of Elvis Presley, who "went walking on the water with his pills," and the ragged but right "Ain't That Pretty at All" is an unlikely but powerful recovery anthem in which he howls "I'd rather feel bad than not feel anything at all." When Zevon confronts his own ...
