| | Rainbow On Stage CD (1977) Remastered
Mago De Oz songs
$6.55 Breaking with '70s heavy metal tradition by releasing a live album after only two studio efforts (you're supposed to have three before the live one), Rainbow served up this double platter in 1977. On Stage is full of great songs and playing, but somehow it lacks some of the excitement that existed at those early Ritchie Blackmore concerts. The production is just kind of flat. That doesn't change the fact that there is some great stuff to be found here and nowhere else, such as the side-long version of "Mistreated," from Deep Purple's Burn. The also epic version of "Catch the Rainbow" contains some awesome guitar work but is too long for its own good. In another break with metal tradition, the album kicks off with "Kill the King," a blazing rocker from their next platter, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. The idea of opening your show with a song no one knows is very foreign to both heavy metal and double live albums. On the band's classic song, "Man on the Silver Mountain," Ronnie Dio cries out in his over-the-top vocal finale, "I'm the man, I'm the man, I'm the man....we're all the maaaaaaaaaannnn." That is unconsciously funny enough to make the disc worthwhile all by itself. ~ Geoff Ginsberg
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Rainbow: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Tony Carey (keyboards); Jimmy Bain (bass); Cozy Powell (drums).
| | Jack Teagarden Mis'Ry And The Blues CD (1961) Limited Edition; Digipak
Mago De Oz album
$10.15 Trombonist Jack Teagarden's Verve recordings, his last batch of studio sides, have tended to be underrated. Teagarden was actually still in prime form up until the time of his unexpected death in early 1964. For this set, his sextet (which also includes trumpeter Don Goldie, clarinetist Henry Cuesta, pianist Don Ewell, bassist Stan Puls, and drummer Barrett Deems) mostly performs obscurities. Teagarden sings a couple of charming Willard Robison songs ("Don't Tell a Man About His Woman" and "Peaceful Valley"), Ewell is featured on "Froggie Moore Blues," organist Shay Torrent sits in on an unusual version of "Love Lies," and Goldie is showcased on "Afternoon in August." Other songs include "I Don't Want to Miss Mississippi," "It's All in Your Mind," and "Mis'ry and the Blues." The only Dixieland standards performed are "Basin Street Blues" and "Original Dixieland One-Step." Whether taking trombone solos or singing, Teagarden sounds inspired by the fresh material throughout. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in Chicago Illinois in June 1963. Includes liner notes by George Hoejer.
Personnel: Jack Teagarden (vocals, trombone); Don Goldie (trumpet); Don Ewell (piano); Shay Torrent (organ); Stan Puls (bass); Barrett Deems (drums).

| | Hi Power Soldiers: Book 6 CD (2006) Enhanced CD
Mago De Oz CD music
$14.45 Now on its sixth "book," Hi Power Soldiers continues as a relatively high-profile series dedicated to the crew of MCs affiliated with Moreno Valley, CA's Hi Power Entertainment, which has enough clout within the Latin rap community to be distributed by Universal. Book 6 of the series features many of the same MCs (Scrappy-Loco, Lil' Tweety, Mr. Criminal) heard on prior volumes, and Mr. Capone-E, as always, features prominently. The remainder of the crew isn't all that exceptional, and neither are the productions, but the disc delivers another consistent balance of dramatic, confrontational tracks and relatively laid-back, party-oriented material. ~ Andy Kellman
| | Punchbuggy Yellow Simple CD (2006)
Mago De Oz music CDs
$16.45 Kim Koren Kim began performing at the tender age of four, sitting on her father's knee and singing while he played the banjo. All through elementary school, she sang in the choir and appeared in musicals such as Annie and The Wizard of Oz. In high school, Kim tried her hand at singing in rock bands, everything from Kiss and Aerosmith, to Journey, mostly performing festivals and coffee houses. Her career as a songwriter didn't begin until 1990, when her father bought her a new Yamaha acoustic guitar for Christmas, and she taught herself to play. The songs were simple, melodic, and very catchy. Kim started to venture out to the open mic nights in the Hamilton area, and found audiences to be very receptive. From there, she made an appearance on the Mother's Day Telethon, and in a Molson Export commercial. After about a year of playing the Hamilton area, Kim decided it was time to start a family. The time off provided her with insight and inspiration to beging writing again. In 2001, she got back to work, this time with a band, and Punchbuggy Yellow was born. After two years of playing cover songs, audiences were asking if they could buy a CD of original material. Flattered and excited, Kim pulled out some old originals, and some new ones written on her many road trips, and headed into the studio in the summer of 2003. Within eight weeks, "Simple" was released. Kim wanted her fans in Southampton to have something to listen to through the winter until she returned next summer, so on the drive up, she hand packaged 30 copies of Simple for her most devoted fans. She also sent out a single, "Divided" to radio stations across southern Ontario, and it still gets airplay on the northern stations.Kim was invited to perform live on 820 CHAM as a guest of Randall Prescott and Tracey Brown (Family Brown Country). In October 2003, Kim played her first Hamilton Music Scene festival, and has every year since, having Divided added to the HMS compilation CD. Since the release of Simple, the name Punchbuggy Yellow continues to spread, and CD sales continue to climb. Radioplay includes 820 CHAM, CFMU, Country 93.5, satellite radio in Calgary and Toronto, and recently, a live performance on Y101 in Ottawa with country recording artist Colin Amey. In the fall of 2005, Kim began recording her second CD. With the help of seasoned writers and producers, she has found a new maturity in her songs that has opened many doors for her. Although Kim loves working in the studio, and having a hand in producing, her passion is still on the stage. Every year her fanbase gets larger, and the demand for another album with it. She is very excited about the new CD and all the fabulous musicians that will be on it. In addition to writing and singing, Kim is a very enthusiastic actress. She has starred as the Narrator in Theatre Ancaster's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Doo Wop Shop, and most recently in Guys and Dolls.Kim has also performed with The Aldershot Players, and Dundas Litlle Theatre. She has also been breaking into the independant film scene.Stay tuned to find out where you can find Kim Koren next!contact info:email punchbuggy@execulink.comphone # 905-627-2621Kimkoren.com

| | Pablo Turntable Technology CD (2009) (Import) Import
Mago De Oz CD music
$26.29 Highly anticipated 2009 two CD release from beat technician Pablo (AKA Michael Hunter). Turntable Technology is a diverse and mesmerizing album that defies all genre boundaries. Sounding like a reincarnation of The Avalanches crossed with De La Soul and The Cinematic Orchestra right through to Ennio Morricone and Jon Brion, Pablo fuses rare beats and breaks, Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz together with soundtrack, classical and Downtempo. Experimenting heavily with instrumentation, many of the parts are played by Pablo himself, including the Cuatro guitar, Puerto Rico's national instrument. 27 tracks. Soma.
