(1 Customer Review)
Mixing in tracks from 1971's rather weak London Howlin' Wolf Sessions with poorly captured bootleg recordings from an early-'60s European tour, this set of Howlin' Wolf selections has been issued several times under different titles over the years, including as Killing Floor from Charly Records in 1996 and again under that title in 2001 from Magnum Records, as Masters from Purple Pyramid in 1998, as 16 Classic Tracks from Cleopatra Records in 2000, and as Best of Howlin' Wolf from Master Classics in 2004. Wolf was a force of nature and a tremendously powerful performer, but these tracks just don't have it, and listeners should seek out his Chess or Sun recordings instead. ~ Steve Leggett Best Of Howlin' Wolf Music Howlin Wolf Best Of Howlin' Wolf Songs Best Of Howlin' Wolf Music Review Purchase Best Of Howlin' Wolf CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
Best Of Howlin' Wolf album
$9.95 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision and abandon, creating the perfect canvas for Wells's sly, sexy frontman antics. ...

Best Of Howlin' Wolf music CDs
$14.69 It is ironic that so many classic female blues singers recorded a ton of material between 1921 and 1924 and, when the recording techniques had advanced greatly and the musicianship of their accompaniments had vastly improved, the vocalists had much less opportunity to be documented. Sara Martin recorded three CDs worth of material during 1922-25, and then just 23 tunes during the three years covered by this CD. Martin was at her best during the latter period but she only had three recording sessions in 1926, one in 1927 and three in 1928 before her recording career came to an end. She was accompanied by many impressive players during this era including ...

| | Brooks Williams Little Lion CD (2000)
Best Of Howlin' Wolf album
$13.55 Brooks Williams is primarily known as a singer/songwriter with a strong cult following on the acoustic circuit. But his guitar playing has also won him considerable attention, and on this album it's the guitar that takes center stage. Playing alone and with the accompaniment of second guitarist John Daniel, Williams delivers a set of originals and well-chosen covers, the latter including a bossa nova arrangement of the "Ode to Joy" chorale from Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," an acoustic version of Hot Tuna's "Water Song," and a rollicking rendition of "54-46 (Was My Number)" by Toots and the Maytals. Williams is one of those rare guitarists whose virtuosity falls gently on the ear; listening to his mournful bottleneck slide playing on "Goodbye Walker Percy" or the intricate syncopations of his kora-inspired "Lizard Logic," you won't often find yourself wondering how on earth anyone could play that stuff -- instead, you'll just be surprised and moved by his melodic inventiveness and by his sweet clarity of tone. Not to mention his sense of humor; it's not every day you hear a bossa nova arrangement of the "Ode to Joy." (Somewhere Herbert Von Karajan is rolling in his grave, and that's just fine.) ~ Rick Anderson
LITTLE LION is the album Brooks Williams fans have been waiting for. Long recognized as one of the finest songwriters on the acoustic circuit, Brooks Williams has also been lauded as one of the most melodic and tasteful guitarists anywhere. Little Lion is the first Brooks Williams album that features nothing but his glorious ...
