Given the variable quality of the Johnny Thunders catalog, one should approach any new release or compilation with caution, and Anthology is no different. Yes, most of the tunes one would identify with Thunders are included, but aside from the L.A.M.F. tracks and a handful of others, these are not the best-known versions of these songs. In fact, not a single track from So Alone is included, probably due to licensing issues. So this ends up being a hodge-podge of mostly live tracks, presumably whatever Anarchy Music could get their hands on (thus the title "Anthology" and not "Greatest Hits"). ~ Sean Westergaard

It's not terrible, but this would make a poor introduction to Johnny Thunders, and probably won't thrill fans too much either. ~ Sean Westergaard

| | Ozark Mountain Daredevils Time Warp: The Very Best Of... CD (2000)
Anthology CD music
$11.99 Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastering Studios West, North Hollywood, California).
Although it omits three songs from the far less comprehensive (and deleted) 1983 12-track Best Of, and doesn't include any live or post-A&M music, this 2000 release stands as the final word on the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' career. Cherry-picking 21 tunes from their five studio album stint circa 1974-1978 -- with the lion's share coming from their first three albums and only three selections from the final two -- this is pretty much all you'll need from the under-recognized band that worked in the '70s country-rock shadows of Poco and Firefall, but weren't as dependable or pop savvy as either. In fact, their biggest hit, the Hall & Oates, blue-eyed soul-styled "Jackie Blue," was so atypical of the band's characteristically down-home approach that it ultimately may have been more damaging to their career than if they had clicked with a song more representative of their ...

| | Ozark Mountain Daredevils It'll Shine When It Shines CD (1974)
Anthology album
$13.45 Following the success of their self-titled debut, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' sophomore release, It'll Shine When It Shines, continues on their already established path of California-style country-rock. This release contained what would ultimately prove to be their greatest hit, "Jackie Blue," which ended up peaking at number three on the pop chart. Although "Jackie Blue" is by far the least countrified track on the album, it embodies the casual, understated groove of the band that could be found on any of the Daredevils' releases. Although when examined closely the album is really three neatly separate albums by ...
| | 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong: 39 Golden Greats CDs (2004)
Anthology CD music
$13.45 From the late 1970s to the early '00s, almost every year brought with it at least one Fall album. Throughout the career of the ridiculously prolific British post-punk band, the one consistent element has been Mark E. Smith. With his unmistakably entrancing vocal sneer and oft-absurd lyrics, Smith is the hard-living heart of the Fall, stridently leading a nearly endless array of musicians under the band's banner.
Nowhere is the Fall's longevity more evident on the first track of this two-disc collection, 1978's "Repetition," a spare, lumbering ...

| | Q Electronics Drum Buddy Demonstration, Vol. 1 CD (2001)
Anthology album
$13.25 The analog manifesto on the inside may or may not be real -- it's certainly impassioned enough -- but no justification is needed for fun, and that's what this engagingly silly little album is. Quintron has enough fun doing his own thing, to be sure, and Drum Buddy Demonstration, Vol. 1 is no different. The Buddy itself is an instrument of Quintron's invention -- as pictured on the front cover, it looks to be somewhere between a theremin and a scratching turntable for Edison cylinders -- and it's used and abused in order to create a series of messy and entertaining little fragments. Its sound is very intentionally primitive and muffled at many points, but not wholly -- ear-piercing treble parts have just as much of a place as rumbling psuedo-drums. There's as much hip-hop (at one point Quintron flatly introduces the booty track "Scratch" with the words "This is the scratch oscillator with a Miami background") in the songs as there is hi-fi/lounge revivalism, and there's ...

| | Clumsy Lovers Smart Kid CD (2005)
Anthology songs
$9.55 On their seventh record (second to garner a non-local release), Vancouver's Clumsy Lovers have hit the sweet spot with their signature blend of irreverent folk-rock and progressive country. Smart Kid is what Barenaked Ladies might have sounded like had they continued in the vein of Gordon instead of pandering to MTV. It's goofy, earnest, meticulously crafted, and expertly played, with echoes of early Camper Van Beethoven and Spirit of the West. That earnestness keeps less comedic numbers like "Coming Home" and "Not Long for This World" from turning into sentimental filler and helps make offbeat numbers such as "Bobby Banjo," "Cock of the North," and the Celtic and reggae-infused "London Bridge" actually work. The Clumsy Lovers have managed to nail down the often intangible feel of a truly congenial, inclusive, and well-attended club show, and it's a ...
| | Tony Lowe and Alison Fleming All Of The Above CD (2006)
Anthology album
$10.15 Imagine a place where a world of music, colour and scent combine, surrounding and engaging you, the audience, in a glorious tri-sensory experience. Each composition is influenced by the colours in the visible spectrum corresponding with a mood that it is experienced when listening to the songs which move through different musical styles; including rock, pop, acoustic and orchestral. Most people are aware of the influence of colour on our moods and emotions, the subjective power of a particular image, and the manner in which music can move us deeply. Combining these with a sense of smell produces a powerful sensory experience.Listener reviews: "Very cool, love those chord changes, very original very, very original, sounds awesome. ...
