FINALLY WOKEN marks the recording debut of Welsh singer/songwriter Jem Griffiths. With a voice that brings to mind Beth Orton and songs that sometimes echo the poppier aspects of atmospheric electronic acts such as Air and Royksopp, Jem unveils tunes that are custom-made for lounge, cafe, and bedroom listening. The breezy title track floats on gentle ocean sounds and a light acoustic guitar line, while the slightly upbeat "They" glides on funky rhythms and a vintage Swingle Singers vocal sample. Mixing up the chill-out vibe, however, are dramatic, guitar-driven songs such as "Come On Closer" and "Falling for You." FINALLY WOKEN's highlight, though, is the amazingly infectious "Just a Ride," a joyous ode to carefree living. Given her confident singing and the eclectic mix of styles presented on this album, Jem should easily appeal to fans of Orton, Dido, and Sarah McLachlan.

JEM is really good! I was visiting UK, went into HMV to look for some totally different CDs. They were playing JEM and at the checkout I had to buy this CD on the spot not knowing who the artists was.
According to the girl at the checkout this was happening all the time. People just buying because they were listening.

If you are looking for the "next big thing", THIS IS IT! Finally! Something that transends the bland post-Y2K pop music that we have been suffering through lately! With Fiona Apple on a seemingly permanent hiatus, I wasn't sure another female vocalist/songwriter was going to come along and fill that void any time soon. FORGET ALL OF THOSE REDICULOUS COMPARISONS TO DIDO AND JEWEL... This is music more in the vein of Fiona Apple, Beth Hart, and early Alanis Morissette with a little Evanescence thrown in for good measure. Right now, Jem is the best keep secret of true music fans. She is on the verge of blowing up and becoming one of the biggest female musicians of this decade. BUY THIS ALBUM AND BE AHEAD OF THE GAME!
