2004 remastered reissue of 1977 album, originally released by Deram, features 14 tracks including 4 bonus tracks, 'Wrong Time, Right Place', 'Marie' (A-side of Decca single released 1979), 'Heart Of Steel' (B-side of Decca single released 1979 - prev. unreleased on CD), & 'Learning The Game' (prev. released as bonus track 1987). Universal.
This 1977 solo album from Justin Hayward (Moody Blues) includes "Country Girl." CD contains 4 bonus tracks. Liner Note Author: Mark Powell. Recording information: Threshold, London, England; Westlake, Los Angeles, CA. Illustrator: Colin Elgie. Hayward has always been at his best as a mystical/romantic, and Songwriter is the solo album that best displays these qualities around a relatively lean sound. From the gentle, lullaby-like "Raised on Love" to the ethereal mystical "Nostradamus," the album is a beguiling collection of material, more personal than his work with The Moody Blues. The material is richly scored, yet lean enough to seem like chamber music next to The Moody Blues' rock symphonies. ~ Bruce Eder Justin Hayward's Songwriter was the best of the solo albums to come out from the members of the Moody Blues during their 1974-1978 hiatus, and it has held up better than any of the others, a fact reflected in that it not only managed to stay in print on CD longer than any of the others, but was reissued in significantly upgraded sound with three superb bonus tracks in May of 2004. First and foremost is "Wrong Time, Right Place," a driving electric rocker with a great beat and a wryly ironic lyric, which was recorded for Songwriter but lost before the album was assembled; the follow-up single "Marie," an electric ballad with a rich, dramatic vocal performance by Hayward, surrounded by several layers of electric and acoustic guitars; and "Heart of Steel," an ornate slowie with some intelligent and restrained synthesizer work. The new annotation answers many questions concerning the album and its origins, and the producers have also included the bonus track from the old CD edition, Hayward's surprisingly effective rendition of Buddy Holly's "Learning the Game." ~ Bruce Eder

Songwriter Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Alot of weak songs THis sort of proves that on his own, Justin Hayward doesn't quite cut it. His voice is spectacular, but 90% of the songs on here are weak and awful. The most outstanding track is "Nostradamus" but that does drag on. I am not disputing Justin as a great songwriter (think of his contrubutions to so many Moodies albums) but with this 1977 solo release, he seemed to take a different path and it was not a good one. Songwriter Re-release + Years ago when the Moodies broke up I was disappointed for a while. Their music was inspirational to me for many of my pre and teen years. After a short time, Songwriter appeared and after much anticipation, I purchased it listened to Justin's tunes and found half to be bland and "b-side" material.
Blue Jays (released during the same period), on the other hand, was both interesting, fun and "Moody Blues-like".
I guess, Justin needed John to inspire his work at that time. This new CD added 4 songs which was why I purchased it at this time. I don't know why they were added, as 2 were "bland" again. So my opinion (as a long time Moodies fan) is: "If you haven't heard this record, buy it, but don't expect it to be like Justin's later solo work (Moving Mountains, for example). It's average for Justin, because his fans expect that 'Moody's' sound. Enjoy it for what it is: Historical Moody Blues minus the Moodies. Submitted by gjsmason (Long Island, NY.) | | Moody Blues December CD (2003)
Songwriter
$7.85 New Studio Album Feat.New & Mostly Christmas Songs.
The Moody Blues includes: Justin Heyward, John Lodge. Recorded in Italy. One must give the Moody Blues credit for tenacity and a single-pointed focus. For 37 years they've put forth a startlingly consistent series of themes: optimism, a kind of blind-faith spirituality that the universe is in good hands and that people are by and large decent and kind, and love songs that can be a bit twee, but nonetheless connect when one is in the emotional space to hear them. Their music has always been intimate and pretentious in the best sense of the words. December is the Moodies' first Christmas album. The classic lineup has been whittled down to three: John Lodge, Justin Hayward, and Graeme Edge; Ray Thomas decided to call it quits after the band's 2003 tour ended. The band is augmented by unofficial member and producer Danilo Madonia in the studio. This is the most curious of Christmas recordings. December is an album about the spirit of Christmas but, with ...

$11.29 For a band who only released three albums in their lifetime, the Stooges left behind a whole lot of scraps, wreckage, and unfinished business. There are literally dozens of discs which have emerged in the years since the band's inglorious collapse which document live shows, rehearsals, studio outtakes, alternate mixes, and various other Stooges audio fragments, and the really remarkable part is nearly all of it stems from the James Williamson era of the band, 1972 through 1974, when the band recorded the Raw Power album before eventually lurching to a halt. (The exhaustive box set 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions is perhaps the only major archeological find unearthed from the earlier Ron Asheton edition of the Stooges). Separating the wheat from the chaff in the strange netherworld of Stooges arcania is no easy task, but that's what the folks who compiled Penetration have set out to do, pulling together the best known and most useful selections from the latter days of the Stooges and the dawning of Iggy Pop's solo career. Since the vast majority of this stuff wasn't necessarily meant for release in the first place, Penetration suffers from the same pitfalls of most posthumous Stooges releases -- namely dodgy sound and uneven material -- but at very least this set gives the material a more intelligent and logical context than it has had in the past, and most of the real high points of this era are represented. Included are a few of the infamous alternate mixes of Raw Power that Iggy aired on a Detroit radio station, demos for "I've Got a Right," "I'm Sick ...
