(3 Customer Reviews)
Record-setting R&B vocal group Boyz II Men have never been averse to covers, having scored mega-hits in the early-1990s with both the Five Satins doo-wop classic "In the Still of the Night (I'll Remember)" and the G.C. Cameron classic "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." On 2004's THROWBACK, the group tries its hand at an assortment of vintage R&B tunes and succeeds with an array of fine melodies.
THROWBACK is the outfit's first release after the departure of Michael McCary, but the trio's vocal harmonies are as tight and alluring as ever. In fact, it's when the harmonies take center stage that the album is at its most appealing. The group reinterprets Michael Jackson's gorgeous ballad "Human Nature," accompanied by only a few African drums and a light acoustic guitar, as their voices examine the subtle beauty of the song. The ensemble finds an entirely new angle to Hall & Oates's "Sara Smile," but Teddy Pendergrass's sensual "Close the Door" is rendered faithful to the original. Although the boys aren't the superstars they were in the '90s, THROWBACK proves they still know their way around a good song.
Japanese edition of 2004 release from one of the most commercially successful r&b groups of all time, features 11 tracks. No US release is currently scheduled. Copy Controlled. Canyon.
Japanese version. Throwback Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Boyz Are Back and Better Than Ever If you are a true lover of R&B music and a fan of Boyz II Men you must add this CD to your collection. The vocals are terrific and the production is outstanding. They've taken the "classics" and added their special touch and made it their own. You will not be disppointed with this CD. I know I wasn't. | | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Throwback album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Throwback CD music
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any ...
| | Aaron Neville Warm Your Heart CD (1991)
Throwback music CDs
$7.09 WARM YOUR HEART, Aaron Neville's 1991 A&M debut, finds the New Orleans crooner bringing his sweet, soulful voice to a collection of pop songs couched in lush production. The opener, a cover of Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927," sets the stage for the star-studded proceedings to follow, with its arrangement by Van Dyke Parks and vocal help from Rita Coolidge and Linda Ronstadt (who also contributes production and arrangements throughout the album). Elsewhere Neville tackles tunes by John Hiatt, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, Jimmy Buffett, and even a stirring version of "Ave Maria."
Though the choice of material and sleek, polished studio treatments are clear attempts to push Neville toward commercial viability, the R&B lion retains all of his charm in this setting. His angelic tenor, which swoops and flutters like a bird, from delicate falsetto to full-throated passion, is in top form on the lovely ballad "With You in Mind" and Neville's own work-song-based "Angola Bound." WARM YOUR HEART succeeds on two levels--it has enough smooth sheen to satisfy fans of adult-contemporary R&B, and enough of Neville's undeniable talent, grace, and showmanship to please his old-school devotees.

| | Nikki Sudden Treasure Island CD (2004)
Throwback CD music
$12.59 Nikki Sudden must have been in seventh heaven when the Faces' keyboard boss Ian McLagan agreed to play piano and organ on select tracks from his 2004 garage-and-burn outing with the Last Bandits (John Clifford Barry on bass and Stephane Doucerain on drums), Treasure Island. Given his total Faces and Rolling Stones worship, Sudden must have been beside himself with joy. But Mac isn't the only legendary guest on the set. Along with old mates Dave Kusworth and Anthony Thistlewaite, former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and pedal steel ace B.J. Cole also lend a hand on the set. While it's true that Sudden gets little to no notice on American shores for his rootsy swagger and roll that takes the entirety of rock's grand yesteryear into its arms and wrings fresh life out of it with drunken joy and pathos, Sudden has made his share of fine recordings, and Treasure Island may his finest since Kusworth founded the Jacobites. There's the trashy swamp of "Kitchen Blues" with Taylor on guitars and the raggedly elegant balladry of "Stay Bruised," which Sudden himself deems "one of the hottest romantic numbers you'll ever hear." There's the sexed up wail of "Wooden Floor" with Mac on B-3 and Cole on steel and the spooky, Thislewaite mandolin-drenched darkness of "Russian River," the Last Bandits shambolic blues stroll in ...
| | Very Best Of Death Row CD (2005)
Throwback music CDs
$13.39 One of the biggest radio singles of 1993, Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' But a G Thang" (featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg) proved to be an unforgettable anthem that brought West Coast rap to the mainstream. From there, Suge Knight's Death Row Records became one of major forces in '90s hip-hop, virtually defining "gangsta rap." The company waned near decade's end, as conflict claimed the life of 2Pac, other stars left for different labels, and the combative Knight's extensive legal troubles landed him in jail. However, 2005 found Death Row set for a strong comeback with releases by Petey Pablo and Kurupt, along with this retrospective, THE VERY BEST OF DEATH ROW.
The name bears no deception, as the collection contains almost every major hit from the label, capturing the sound from its heyday in the mid-'90s. Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Tha Dogg Pound are well represented, along with Warren G's Michael McDonald-sampling megahit "Regulate" and Lady of Rage's "Afro Puffs." The compilation ends with a look to the future in the form of a bonus track featuring both Petey Pablo and Kurupt, ...
