| | Henry Threadgill This Brings Us To, Vol. 1 CD (2009) Digipak
First Swallow music CDs
$13.09 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, sparks are always flying about in a collective discourse that is completely unpredictable. Electric bass guitarist Stomu Takieshi and drummer Elliot Humberto Kavee are practically secondary in this mix of give-and-take improvisation that needs little rhythmic support or urgency. What seems telepathic or in zig-zag patterns is ...

| | Chris Botti In Boston CDs (2009) With DVD
First Swallow CD music
$17.09 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned trumpeter who has grown into his role as a virtuoso since his time backing up Sting -- who of course appears here. Perhaps it isn't surprising then the concert is subtly reminiscent of Sting's own classic coming of age concert moment Bring on the Night. If Sting's 1986 ...
| | Country Gentlemen Early Rebel Recording 1962-1971 CDs (1998)
First Swallow music CDs
$39.49 This is an especially pleasing four-CD set, comprising most of the Country Gentlemen's recordings for the Rebel label over a period of nine years, when they used bluegrass music as a vehicle for innovation by way of country, folk, and rock. The influence of the Osborne Brothers can be heard throughout their early work (along with more mainstream country sources), but then they start cutting Dylan and Tom Paxton songs. The odd early individual tracks lead into the contents of the Bringing Mary Home album, which established their reputation nationally as a bluegrass act to be reckoned with. Disc One ends with the controversial "Big Bruce," a gay parody of Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John" that skirts a fine line between satire, burlesque, and slur. Disc Two features several previously unissued songs, and also shows the group ...
| | Music For Loving: Ben Webster With Strings CDs (1995)
First Swallow songs
$17.19 Principally recorded at Fine Sound, New York between May 28, 1954 and September 9, 1955. Originally released as MUSIC WITH FEELING on Norgran (1039) and as MUSIC FOR LOVING on Norgran (1018).
Originally released as three separate LPs. Includes liner notes by Loren Schoenberg.
Following in the footsteps of his idol Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster's corpus of work has stood up to the test of time. His lyrical sound has made him one of the great tenor saxophone masters in jazz history. On MUSIC FOR LOVING, Webster plays mostly ballads, the style in which Webster feels most comfortable and sounds best. His smoky, romantic sound is perfect for tunes such as "Prelude to a Kiss" and "(I Don't Stand) a Ghost of a Chance (With You)."
MUSIC FOR LOVING (recorded in 1954-1955) is a two-CD set featuring accompaniment by a lush string section with arrangements by Ralph Burns. Five previously unissued alternate takes, five quartet numbers (four with the ...

| | Mary Bue Boat With No Oars CD (2007)
First Swallow songs
$15.19 Mary Bue likes creaky clanky pianos and falling asleep playing guitar. She wants to sing to you about what she's cooking for dinner or what she dreamt about last night. Sometimes carthartic, sometimes joyous and always bittersweet, this newly transplanted minneapolitan is making a soft winter nest of music for you.Blend the sound of Ben Folds' joyous piano pop, Carole King's earthy soul and Tori Amos' quirky, intense intimacy and you'll get an idea of what Miss Bue sounds like. In her teenage days, songs were born out of locking herself in her bedroom with notebooks and her fender squire with a hot pink strap (ask her, she still has it). Eleven years later, the twenty-five year old Bue has been the recipiant of two artist residencies in Florida, nominated ...
