The Nature's Rhythms series from Allegro gets it right. Rather than tainting its ambient nature recordings with pestering synthesizers or contemporary instrumental dreck, the releases let mother nature do the talking. There's little difference between Ocean Storm and a Nature's Rhythms title like Ocean Waves -- both offer the listener roaring waves and crashing surf. This is a reissue of the FIRST Buck Owens album, recorded for Capitol in 1961. He'd yet to fully come into his own--the vocal influences of Ray Price and George Jones are easy to discern, and the Buckaroos' hard-driving twang and sturdy beat were yet-to-be. But the heart Owens puts into these songs--he wrote all but one--is singularly powerful and memorable. And this set includes three genuine country classics: "Under Your Spell Again," "Above and Beyond" and "Second Fiddle." To check out the beginnings of one of the best and most influential figures in country music, or just enjoy a fine, earthy, pop-free country album, this is well worth your time. A classic, anyway you look at it.
If you've worn out shoe leather trudging up and down the streets of Bakersfield looking for those classic 60s Buck Owens' albums, your search has come to an end, brother. The folks at Sundazed now present this reissue from 1961 and have included two bonus tracks 'High As The Mountains' and 'Nobody's Fool But Yours' (early version). 1995.

He probably hates it when people say this, but Roger Eno's compositions do often sound an awful lot like those of his brother Brian -- though it must be said that Roger is by far the more sophisticated musician and composer. On The Flatlands, the more obvious influence is actually fellow chamber experimentalist Harold Budd. What with the sweet, poignant string writing and the unobstrusive piano arpeggios, there's a deep wistfulness about this music that seems to evoke another time and place. The 18 tracks on this album aren't all the same, but they do tend to dissolve into each other while you listen; the effect is of very high-quality ambient music, the kind that you can either leave on at low volume for the atmosphere or turn up for careful listening.
