Dilated Peoples--there could hardly be a more apt name for the long-running California rap crew who, with only three members, sound like a much larger collective as they expand a potent West Coast-heyday sound into bold new territory. Inspiration runs high on Dilated Peoples' NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (the outfit's third album on Capitol after countless underground releases), as revealed by the single "This Way." Joined by Kanye West, one of the most celebrated and prolific rapper/producers of 2004, the trio melds a gospel-tinged R&B sound with a wandering flute line and layers lyrics that range from silly-but-clever observations about girls and money to raw revelations about the sadness of life.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH opens on a powerful beat provided by the Alchemist, with the troupe sagely rhyming on "Marathon" and keeping up the pace throughout the solid, insightful record. The group's talent for twisting around language is most evident on tracks like the introspective "Tryin' to Breathe," which, true to its name, practically suffocates with its tight flow of words, as the trio illustrates its route from the streets to rap success. Dilated Peoples are clearly one of the most intelligent rap groups on the scene, and NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH displays how their smart brand of hip-hop has led to a remarkable career.

Hip Hop: see, Dilated Peoples Leave it to LA's finest to save hip-hop from the great depression that it's in. These dudes are ill, PERIOD! I wasnt a big fan of dilated until I heard "Marathon" in the underground circles (Talk about a track to impact your life). So when I copped the album, the apple didnt fall far from the tree. Not too many albums come out in which ALL OF THE TRACKS ARE ILL. "Caffeine" and "Closed Session" are classic Dilated tracks. COPP THIS ALBUM, worth every last cent in my pocket. $14.15 When OnceOver began to write their fourth full length album in seven years, the cards were stacked against them. The band would fight through unbelievable loss and heartbreak most bands would not be able to endure. The strength and determination of all the members were truly put to the test. Their original singer left the band to pursue different avenues in life, and the four remaining members weren't sure about the direction of the band. After months of unsuccessful searching for a singer, the band was at a loss of what to do next. 'I remember being concerned about the band's future. We all knew we didn't want to stop, but we had just wasted a half a year looking for a singer and didn't know what to do next,' said bassist Nick Archer. 'That's where Steve came in,' guitarist Paul Dwyer added. Steve Dwyer, the bands original drummer, had been an integral part of the bands songwriting and singing. Therefore, it seemed to be the most comfortable and natural step that he would take over as lead singer for OnceOver. 'I had sung on my own records before and recorded vocals for songs plenty of times, but nothing could have prepared me ...
